Made in USA?

I was talking to someone today and he mentioned something that he'd heard from people who'd been on Gibson factory tours.

Apparently, for a guitar to be 'Made in USA' only 10% of the work has to take place in the States. The rest of the guitar build can take place anywhere. On the tour, mysterious large crates were seen being delivered to the Nashville factory.

China was mentioned...

Yeah, because they wouldn't think to hide that kind of thing from the tour. They're just that stupid.

Re: Made in USA?

It is true that a very small percentage of work needs to be done in the USA for a product to be labelled that way. Gibson doesn't grow the wood, make the hardware, or electronics, but they cut the wood, paint and finish, install everything and basically do more than 10% of the 'work'.

Why would Gibson need to outsource? Half their stuff already looks like they do it with their feet.

Re: Made in USA?

Funny thing is I heard the same thing a couple years a go. I put down to sour grapes at the time because I didn't buy my guitar off this particular dealer.

Re: Made in USA?

Well that's it. It would be nice if everything was done in the same place, with high quality standards... As it is they have a hard time just cutting, setting glue, painting and putting together the pieces without letting a million lemons out the door each year.

I'm gonna drop a bomb here...

Some asian countries have been making some superior guitars for years now... Japan for example. I've never played a terrible Japanese guitar. Go figure.

Re: Made in USA?

Actually, I think it just needs to be assembled in the US for it to be considered a "US product" - at least from an economic perspective. The gross domestic product, or something like that. In other words, a Honda manufactured in the US is considered part of our GDP, and a Chevrolet made in Canada or Mexico is not. Same thing for guitars. But then, that might not be what you are referring to.

I will say this, I felt my LP Custom was very well put together, as it should be for the price. But I tried out a '59 reissue (VOS) today that cost half again what my '68 reissue cost, and I liked the '68 better. Maybe because that is what I am becoming used to, but in any case I didn't think it was worth that much more (it was over $5K.) The tuners seemed rather cheaply made - maybe because that is the way they were made back then, but for that kind of money I expected more.

I guess it is all personal preference, but I'm sensing that others are less than impressed with some of what Gibson is putting out. Whether that has anything to do with outsourcing or not I really couldn't say. I don't really care if the product lives up to its name. I just know that I am pleased with what I have. That's what it is all about, isn't it?

David

Re: Made in USA?

The FTC has a lot of information about what qualifies as "Made In USA". Read it here

snippet:

"According to the Federal Trade Commission, "Made in USA" means that "all or virtually all" the product has been made in America. That is, all significant parts, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Products should not contain any — or only negligible — foreign content. The FTC's Enforcement Policy Statement and its business guide, Complying with the Made in USA Standard, spell out the details of the standard, with examples of situations when domestic origin claims would be accurate and when they would be inappropriate. See ftc.gov/os/statutes/usajump.htm for more information."

You must be younger than me. I know the high end Japanese stuff nowadays is great, but The Hondo IIs me and all my friends had in the 70s were absolutely heinous.
