Newest and oldest addtions to my family

Hi all,

I didn't know this community existed until the other day, but since I just bought a new Les Paul I thought I'd better share it.

This is she, a 2007 (5 April, I believe) Les Paul Classic Antique:

She's got Gibson H90 pups that look like P90s but are actually coax humbuckers. However, the tone controls are push-pull coil tap switches. Nice. I like it best on singles. Here's the top:

It's not as outrageously nice as some of the highly-figured tops I've seen on this board, but I'm happy.

And just so she doesn't get dirty on me, here's a pic of my first love:

That's my Standard. It's a 1978 (17 Sept) with the three-piece maple neck and a three piece top. I bought it very cheaply in the mid 1980s when flocks of fashion victims were grazing on pointy-droopy-headstock Jackson clones and playing poodle rock.

I've only recently changed the pups to SH-1s when the stock bridge pup finally gave up the ghost and went microphonic. The top's not as sexy as the classic, but she rocks like a beotch and simply loves the TS808 into my Super Reverb.

She's been my favourite for more than 20 years, but with the Classic I feel some Jeff Beck style single-coil goodness coming on. The neighbours are gonna hate me...

Both are beautiful! How do you like the single-coil sound when you've got the splitter on? Does it have that P90 bite?

Re: Newest and oldest addtions to my family

Thanks all for the nice comments about my girls.

@ ac4rd,
The H90s really do bite in single-coil mode. I have always loved the sound of a single coil at the neck. Yes, I know, it's Burst heresy, but you'll have to burn me with my Telecaster before I recant. And out of the single coils, I like the P90 sound best. This is both! Key words: pig; in sheet; happy as.

The coil-tap sound at the bridge is bright and bitey, and with moderate gain it does that Malcolm Young sound perfectly. Dirtied up a bit more and with the tone rolled back (~ 50%) and the volume down just a tad (~ 90-95%) it goes out into that sweet Jeff Beck sound (think 'Cause We've Ended As Lovers' off Blow By Blow).

For perspective, I'm playing that through an MI Audio Crunch Box for high gain sounds, into a TS808 into a black face Super Reverb.

I haven't tried this guitar through my Brit 100 W and 4 x 12 yet.
