Benefit Auction Treasures Flood-Damaged Guitars As Souvenirs

Benefit auction treasures flood-damaged guitars as souvenirs | tennessean.com | The Tennessean

Quote:
There's a photo in Vince Gill's home, in which Gill and his Gibson J-60 guitar perform ballad "When I Call Your Name" while Grand Ole Opry great Roy Acuff stands next to him, a tear in his eye.

Acuff died in 1992, and back in May, Gill figured the Gibson was gone as well, a victim of the flood. It was, in fact, damaged beyond any notion of playability, but Tuesday afternoon it sat, displayed at the Hard Rock Cafe for the kickoff of NASH2O, a unique auction of historic, flood-damaged instruments.
The auctions will take place over the next two months, with guitars from Gill, Duane Eddy, Peter Frampton, John Jorgenson, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and many others auctioned at different times to raise money for the MusiCares Nashville Flood Relief Fund, the Nashville Musicians Association Flood Relief Fund and the Fireman's Fund National Philanthropic Program for grants to Nashville fire and rescue departments.
The guitars aren't playable, but they are singular souvenirs.

"These are meaningful, significant guitars," said instrument expert George Gruhn, who noted that smashed guitars have brought thousands of dollars in auctions. But these were too valuable to smash. "These were favorites," Gruhn said.

Country star Phil Vassar headlines, with local artists including Heidi Newfield, Will Hoge and Damien Horne joining in. GAC and Sirius XM personality Storme Warren will host the event, set to take place on Broadway between First and Fourth Avenues.

The "Bash" is free and open to the public, and starts at 7:30 p.m.

This year's Keith Urban-headed We're All for the Hall benefit concert has raised nearly $450,000 for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, officials announced Tuesday.
The sold-out event, held Oct. 5 at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, followed last year's inaugural concert, and the total raised between the two comes in at roughly $1 million.
Museum director Kyle Young thanked Urban, museum board president Vince Gill and "the amazing line-up of artists and musicians who made the show such a success" in a statement.
Those performers included John Mayer, Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Alison Krauss and a host of other stars.
"I cannot thank everyone enough for all that they did to make this show the incredible success that it was," Urban said.

Peter Frampton-Black Les Paul from Peter Frampton on NASH2O: Flood Relief

Quote:
Description
Gibson PF 192 (Peter Frampton model Les Paul Custom). Three pickups with custom wiring, large frets. Signature engraved on pearl fingerboard inlay. Peter selected a few of these guitars from Gibson's production over time, and had them tweaked to his specs. The three-pickup "Black Beauty" Les Paul Custom is nearly synonblmous with Frampton - his signature instrument. This guitar still has a stick-o number 2 for easy selection onstage by his guitar tech. Finish damage and body cracks.

That's a nice idea. I always wondered why they gave the first post-flood one to Slash instead of auctioning it and donating the proceeds.

I wonder if any of these could be salvaged with enough TLC from someone who knows what they're doing? (i.e. not me!)
