Proof that the Volute Works!

Though I doubt this was from a fall.

More likely someone stepped on it.

If it's going to break I'd rather have it happen at the headstock.

Re: Proof that the Volute Works!

Is it me or is there no volute on that neck? If there was it would surely not have kept that from happening! Looks like what the next owner did to my '74 SG. That makes my stomach hurt. Glad it's not mine!

Don't think a volute would have helped much in this case.

I think may well be, check out the waythe light is just as it would become almost flat as it went into the neck profile.

I could be wrong, but I think this one is Volute'd

Re: Proof that the Volute Works!

anything can be fixed..the question is...is it worth the price of fixing it? I know that guitar...it needs a new truss rod as well as it is bent and youre looking at removing the fingerboard there which Ive seen quoted at $500 just that alone..not to mention you gotta remove a fingerboard of a neck split in half..good luck with that..you couldnt fix the neck first as the bent rod wouldnt allow you make it sit well. Too much trouble for what its worth. Not to mention the value of the guitar would be shot no matter what you did at this point.

Re: Proof that the Volute Works!

I love volutes--and three of my guitars have them.

But this isn't proof of any sort about the volute.

Re: Proof that the Volute Works!

I think if your guitar gets hit that hard there's not much that's going to save you. It could be argued that if that was done with the headstock up against a solid object the lack of volute may have caused it to break at the headstock which would be a simpler repair, but I have a feeling looking at this that it would just have ended up with 2 breaks, one in the middle of the neck and one at the headstock. In any event, as I said before I'm glad it's not mine!

Re: Proof that the Volute Works!

Ah yea, you can see the volute in the other pictures. $850.00 was a good price for someone that's comfortable repairing a neck. That's going to be a project. Have to be brave to buy a guitar where a chunk of the neck comes in a plastic bag!
