Re: you can own Billy Idols 69 Les Paul Standard..

Dice, I just paid on 2 axes in the pawn shop earlier today.
Sometimes you just have to watch them go.
I posted it here so maybe it would go to someone I "know". If someone here buys it, I'll be happy to pick it up for you!

Yeah, that's the present goal. That's why I can't beat myself up for watching this one go.
I'm guessing it'll go for $2800. Still a great axe for the money. I guess I'll find out after band practice!
BTW Dice, I saw that neck thread. What a d1ck!

Yeah, I got it all worked out, but he definitely is a dick.

I think that this guitar could go for $5k given the 1 piece / 1 piece specs.

I'd rock the hell out of that thing. You know what all those mods do?

They make it obtainable for schmos like me, well, when I have ANY money to spend on one.

I'm sure there will be some sniping going down, but right now at 1850, it seems pretty reasonable. If I had the $, it'd be on the way here.

Re: you can own Billy Idols 69 Les Paul Standard..

I think $3800 is way over what its worth but then again whatg do I know? someone thought it was worth $3800 to them. The scalloped fretboard isn't the only big mod. It apparently had P90's in it and they added the middle pickup plus changed all 3 to full size humbuckers.
As others have stated, Ritchie Blackmore scalloped his fretboards before Malmsteen did. I personally think that mod adds nothing as I have a Jackson Rhoads guitar that has a FACTORY scalloped 12-22 fretboard. I use it as my main Rhoads gigging guitar but I notice no difference in playability or speed. Perhaps others feel differently about them but scalloped boards I could take or leave.

Wow! No, I didn't check craigslist when I got home, which is unusual for me. Thank god I didn't have any cash. Something still smells kinda fishy here to me. Thanks Les!

He sounds a bit disgruntled, doesn't he? There's something fishy going on, for sure. I'm thinking maybe this guy wanted it & didn't get it? Who knows, but I'm actually glad for a change that I was too broke to pull the trigger.

Re: you can own Billy Idols 69 Les Paul Standard..

just woke up.... Yeah he sounds discruntled, but I hate Ebay too for the same reasons and there is so much fraud on there and shills. Legitimate stuff on there is next to none when it comes to auctions. I stick to FIXED buy it now and get all the info I need first if I think I want to get something.. Looks like this guy was offered the second chance thing and caught on that this was a scam.... if you look at the bidding on that thing it shot up at a huge amount in the last seconds.... something NOT right there.... I try to avoid ebay like the plaugue!~ I hate to say it but... I told you so..... Classic "pump and dump" as we Registered Reps used to call it.... I am writing all the numbers down including that serial number and will be sure to stay clear of this guy.... I am sure you will be seeing it offered again....... Then I will have to say I told you so AGAIN

Looking at the bid history it doesn't make sense really. It sounds like "his buddy" tried to be the highest bidder; many people seem to bid just enough to pass the guy ahead of them. But his buddy, by throwing in a rather large bid, tries to make sure he is just over any other snipers who would be up by only $50 or $100 at the last minute...but no way he wants to pay the $3755 he actually bids (stupid Ass, this) - he only wants to ensure he is $50 above the next guy. Unfortunately, the the shill bidder bids WAY HIGH - could have been $4000, could have been $10000, to expose the 2nd highest bid - his buddy's. Now the shill back's out, and the seller offers it to his buddy at the $3755.

Of course he is under no obligation to buy at that price, but he also didn't get it for the $2150 he wanted to. He is an Ass 'cause if the shill only bid $3700, he WOULD have to pay the $3755. The seller is an Ass if he really set it up this way, 'cause it didn't sell after all, unless he just really didn't want it to sell so low. Sniping is fine, but never bid more then you are actually willing to pay.

Uhm.....That's perfectly normal for eBay auctions. You get all the nickel and dimers early on hoping for a cheap deal and then the serious guys (or gals) swoop in at the last second and come away with it.

And to be honest, I know guys that have bid like this before. They really, really want it and put in their initial bid (like this guy did at 17:58:34 PDT) but then a minute later someone outbids him. Now he's determined to get it so he enters a bid that he just KNOWS no one will get close to and it will be his for much less. In the heat of the moment, logic goes out the window. In this case it looks like another guy had the same idea, bid ridiculously high and walk away with it for a lot less.

So what do you do when you plan on winning it for, oh let's say $2500 but your plan backfires and now you're stuck for $3800? Sorry Mr. Seller, I made a mistake. So the seller tries to sell it to the other guy and he really didn't want to go that high either.

Shills don't usually wait until the last minute to bid. They try and drive the price up early on normally. Less chance of getting stuck with the item and a large bill from eBay.

Not saying this is what happened here, just saying that it has happened before. My best friend gets in bidding frenzies like this all the time. So far he's gotten lucky and the only time he's been burned is on small ticket items. One day though, he'll learn.

No, I know exactly what you mean, I didn't used to have soft touch with my left hand, but, speed is often about economy of movement and if you're applying more pressure than is needed to make a note sound clearly then you'll never be as fast as you could be by learning how to fret the note efficiently.

Think about it, if you're busy burying you're finger into the fret, you're applying a large amount of pressure which must be released before the finger can be moved to the next position, you're also using up energy that doesn't need to be and causing your fretting hand to fatigue earlier than it needs to. That's the principle behind the scalloping, after you've got you're left hand technique down, you can just fly.

I do understand what you're saying though, if a heavy hand isn't a problem for ya, then why bother? lol

Gotta say though that having the fretboard scalloped all the way down is a pain, you could really do without it on the first 5-7 frets at least as it can make chords a pain for a while (again, until you get used to it, it's quite good for developing L/hand technique really).

RE: 1969 Gibson Les Paul Standard - $1 (Summerville) (SCAM Alert!!!!)

If you know this person he is a scammer!!!!! He listed it here, then listed it on Ebay and had a shill bidder!! Had a shill put in a hilarilously huge bid trying to catch a legitimate bidder at the top! Then says the highest bidder accidentally hit the wrong button and could not buy at that high price!! and them said since that bidder bid by accident you are the next highest and you can have it at the next highest price!! LOL!! That is not how it works!!!! LOL Then tried to get the guy to pony up the amount HE ( the lister) wanted .This was a buddy of mine!! WHAT a scammer. Too bad for him my buddy was too smart!! Watch out!!!! check the ended listing at Ebay and remermber that one. He is a scammer!!!! The guitar is in HORRIBLE shape too. You think the guy, if he was legit, would have sold it at fair price. He chose to try and rip people off!! THE EBAY item # is 190439522712 The serial number on the guitar is : You are bidding on a 1969 Gibson Les Paul Standard. Serial #: 533233 I would remember this stuff. If it ever comes up again you know the guy is a scammer !! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
This dude is NOT happy.

Strange that his "buddy" bid so high when he didn't want to pay that amount though, isn't it? He quips about the 'shiller' putting in a "hilarilously huge bid" and yet his buddy's bid was up there in the insanity range as well. What's up with that noise?

You reckon he's the 'shiller' & got burned somehow? Something's very odd here.
Maybe it's some personal beef? Maybe he took the guys woman, or something.

I still don't think that the scalloped board is anything to get too bent out of shape about. It isn't like it was a Brazilian board to begin with. Slap a new board on it. The neck isn't broken. That route is nasty, but you could dot a retop conversion on it...

This scam mystery aside, getting that for under $4k and putting $2.5k in to a new board and Burst finish w/ retop/conversion could still put you ahead.

My biggest beef with the board is losing the inlays. I'd be fine with the scallops themselves.

Brazilian Board and some good reproduction inlays, long w/ some big beefy frets, and all is not lost... It is too bad about the original inlays. And board. And body route. But - as rare as late '68 / early '69 LPs are, and for as much as they go for in good shape (even as conversions) - this one could make a great conversion and still be worth good money.

Did SoloDallas get the original board when he bought the 68-59 "fake Keef burst?' Still wouldn't be Brazilian, but it would be correct. Who did he get that from again?
See, I'd be happy the way it is (the inlays would bug me, but I'd live). I'd rather this get beat up than my 68.
