What's so special about Slash?
Why does everyone like Slash?? I agree Appetite For Destruction is good and he's had some good memorable songs but I feel like the guy is only so big because the way he holds his guitars when doing a solo and because of the top hat. Gibson have made him like 7 signature guitars in like the last 2 years which basically all have the same specs and huge price tags but just with different colours. There are other people who deserve signature guitars more than him. Honestly all his guitars are just copies of the Kris Derrig guitar which cost $15000. The same with Marshall they have released 3 signature amps which are all the same really. This new one is just a overpriced reissue of the amp on Appetite For Destruction. Slash's tone ain't even that great! All of Slash's signature gear is just stock with like one small thing changed like the pickups on his guitars for example. Many people rave on about Slash and say he is the best but I fail to see how. His solo album sucks you think after being around for 20 years he could actually try and sing one song on the album and he has just hired a bunch of nobody musicians (apart from Ozzy) to play and sing to build up excitement and promote his new album. Really his album sucks! I feel that people are raving about his new solo album because people are just cutting him some slack saying that its like musical diversity or some shit.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
Slash has managed to parlay one good album 20+ years ago into a career, he guest appears everywhere, has a ton of endorsements yet hasn't done sh*t since AFD.
I respect his ability to stay in the public eye, but the body of work just isn't there for a 23 year career being Slash, I never got it and I like AFD but I was also in High School when it came out and had already been playing guitar for over 10 years so he isn't a influence on me.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
I also forgot to mention I think another reason why he is so overrated is all of this saving the Les Paul bullshit...Other people used it like 30 years before him! He just was like the only person using a Les Paul in 1987 when everyone was using Jackson's and hair metal era guitars. Big deal..

Re: What's so special about Slash?
Let's get real and honest.
He is special to people who think he is special. Just because you don't like him or "get it", doesn't mean he's not a viable guitarist. He is just like every single other guitar player you can name. What is so special about Hedrix, Beck, Les Paul, Van Halen, Page, etc.? Nothing....unless you think they are cool and special. So your question really isn't a question, it's more of a statement that says "I don't like Slash" What is so special about Rap music? Again, nothing unless you are "into it". Doesn't mean it's not special to someone or a viable form of music and culture.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
its because he's marketable, he's cool looking, and people still call him Slash for god's sake.
hence gibson gives him all these sig models so people can buy them. there's even an epiphone sig model for those 12 year olds who are GNR fans and want to be like slash. i'm not a fan of his though. i liked GNR but that's about it. the rest of his stuff didn't really stand out to me. like tarz said i wasn't "into it" plain and simple. i'm not gona crap on him, there are people who aren't "into" the music i play either. Diceman, come on. he's done nothing for rock and roll? he brought back the lp. he (and GNR) inspired tons of young kids to play rock. he still has little kids coming to his signing events to get his autograph. you dont see peter frampton getting that. even Jimmy Page doesn't have that following. |

oh and i dont know why hes give credit for his "slash tone". its basically the woman tone, even sounds like duanes tone.. but like diceman said, its what hes done for rock n roll and for the les paul. since 1987 hes basically been the reigning face of rock. he has the image, when you think rockstar you think slash with the longhair tophat and cigarette. he even has the little icon on mlp ! he made the les paul super popular again, which is why he gets 10 sig models. its also due to the fact that after slash there hasnt been another popular mainstream great guitarist. with him its more of a media thing, then a musician thinghis solo album isnt bad. its no led zeppelin 4, but its not bad. it might not be your taste op, or you might be biased cause u dont seem to like slash IMO hes great, just not legendary |

Re: What's so special about Slash?
This... and I'm a big fan.
However, there are plenty of great guitarists and few legendary ones. You can't deny what he has done for the LP and rock in general and let's face it, Since Appetite came out how many bands/guitarists/musicians are keeping the whole rock n roll thing going? Nickleback? ![]() It's just like everyone else has said. There are plenty of people who would argue the same for whoever the OP's favourite guitarists are. Music is a personal choice and just because the OP and many others on this board dont "get" there are just as many that won't get Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Van Halen, Santana, SRV, Ace or countless others due to the fact they don't appreciate their music styles.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
Slash is a much better player than Ace.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
Oh I dunno. I'm kind of digging his album. All of other solo stuff has really been a disappointment, but I think he got it right on this one. He is no great talent on his own, but few guitar players are. He is a great rock guitar player no doubt about it.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
Snakepit and Velvet Revolver don't do anything for me, nothing to launch someone to legendary guitarist status.......... AFD kicks ass everything after doesn't.
The guy is a great guitar player, but I've seen much better players in bar bands over the years that have regular joe lives, but if they were inclined could shame a lot of the "guitar icons" out there.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
Ace stopped developing in the mid 70's, the early albums didn't capture the vibe that he had live, some of those early tours 74,75,76 showed some great technique in addition to the showmanship of it.
Now Ace is just resting on the glory of those times, a lot like all so called "legends"- Clapton has John Mayall and Cream, Page has Led Zeppelin, Beck has one good album "Blow by Blow" all way in the past. I was drawn to the Les Paul in the 70's because of Ace, Page, Joe Perry.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
One thing to keep in mind about Slash--I know several people who have met him. EVERYONE says what a great guy he was to talk to. I've never heard any stories about him being a jerk. As we all know, that goes a long way.
He is credited for re-popularizing the LP. IMO, if Randy Rhoads hadn't died, it would be a different story (yes, I know he is associated with other axes as well). I have no problem with the various Slash sig guitars...I ain't gonna buy them, but I don't object to them. The AFD sig model kind of sums up the current Gibson era...again, IMO. |

Re: What's so special about Slash?
Slash hit the scene in the 80's, when guitar playing was all about speed and how many notes you could fit into a 15 second solo. He taught us that rock guitar was invented by guys like Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, not Eddie and Yngwie (although they are great guitarists)...that is a quote I read in guitar world about 10 years ago, and truer words were never spoken. He may not be the greatest guitar player that ever lived, but his guitar playing on some of those albums will be heard for years to come. I was never a huge Slash fan...I was a G N' R fan, though. And mostly because of the cool guitar riffs. Lately, I've come to respect his talent, and how much heart and soul goes into his playing. Who cares if his solo album isn't well received, and who cares if he doesn't sing on it. He is a guitar player, and he does what he does best, and does it pretty damn well. You don't have to like him, but don't knock him....how many of your guitar solos were on multi platinum albums?

I admire his ability to be famous for just being Slash.......... never have knocked his skills, just his musical output since AFD.

Re: What's so special about Slash?
