How do you guys deal with it?

So, I have been a guitar player for 16 years. I love it. Fortunately the words "Turn that guitar down" were never uttered from my parents mouths while I was younger. They knew how much I loved to play, and they just learned to drown it out. During college, I had roommates, so I played when they weren't home. After that, I've lived on my own, with no one to tell me to turn it down. Now, I'm 32, and newly married. I'm lovin married life...I have a great wife. But, before it becomes a problem, I wanna know...how do you guys get away with rockin out on your guitars without your spouse saying "Turn it the hell down!!"? Since the wedding a couple months ago, we have been kind of hopping around until we move into our house this month. So, the only time I've been playing guitar has been in the basement of my own home, where no one has been able to give me a hard time for playing too loud. Sometimes, when I get to playin "Paradise City" or "Heartbreaker", I crank the hell out of the volume, and the walls shake. I LOVE IT, and I know you do too! SO...what do I tell my wife the first time I hear her complain? I admit....alot of times I play the same songs over and over again. I can't help it...some songs just move me, and help me release stress. I just want to be prepared the first night we are in our house, and she hears the opening riff of "Black Dog" and gives me that look...

What do you guys do???

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

I moved half the furniture out of my living room, invited my buddy to bring his drumset over to set up and bought a bass amp and cab to put next to my marshall amp and cab. I invite the boys over for jams two or three times a week.

We use PA wedges as coffee tables when music isn't coming through them.

I never really thought too much about what she thought of it. She's never complained...

sounds like a rockstar to me. looks like you're in denial.

just kidding. isnt there an in-between here? maybe you can soundproof the basement or the room you plan on playing in. put carpeting on the walls and ceiling. that helps.

but seriously who's heard of a women leaving a guy because he plays guitar too loud i think you have nothing to worry about.

I promised the wife I'd buy her a keyboard...if she would learn to play "November Rain". Hell...I'd buy her drums if she wanted them. Anything I can do to bring her further into my world!!!

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

Play loud when I'm the only one home.
Otherwise use headphones or play unplugged.

And every now & then play loud anyways.

Shake things up.

At one time I lived in a basement suite and I worked evenings, so I was often home and the people upstairs were not, so I played loud then.

One day I was playing loud and when I paused I heard the guy upstairs playing the same song.
So he came home, heard me playing and plugged in to jam though the floor.

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

Get together with some buddies and jam once in a while, or join/form a band. I'm married with a 9 month old, but i play 3 times a week, so I don't really want to play loud at home much. Plus I get paid, she likes that, works for everyone!

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

let me add the fact that I married a woman who has a little boy. He's become my son...he is 6 now...its awesome, but he doesn't understand the earth shaking sounds that come from my room, until he hears me play "Sweet Home Alabama". Havin a kid is awesome. I bought him a set of drums already. I'm hopin to have a band before the year's out....LOL!

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

If you think there's wait until you've got kids. I just bought one those new Laney Cub 2 x 12 cab & head set ups. It's 15 Watts, but seems WAY louder than my Tiny Terror ever did. It has a <1W setting and even that cranks it out!

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

i have neighbors downstairs. that's why i dont crank it very often. and i made the mistake of buying a 75 watt fender tube combo for my bedroom. i also own a small ss amp that i use with headphone. i highly recommend it for 3am practice sessions after you come home from partying drunk. funny how i do my best playing in the wee hours of the night.

having said that i jam in a studio twice a week at least so i crank my amp there and get all that stress out.

Remind me to include soundproofing in at least a room in our house design. No way I'll be chained to headphones.

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

Loud is for onstage, so turn it down or use headphones or something. My girl knew what she was getting into as I am a keyboardist/guitarist. Apart from my (currently) 10 guitars (7 electric, 2 acoustic, 1 bass), 2 amps and a whole lotta pedals, she also had to contend with an 8 octave stage piano and a Hammond with complementing amp and assorted stuff.

My neighbors see me lugging around the gear on a regular basis and just lately they found out I was a musician, which illustrates the amount of noise that comes out of my cubicle. I keep the noise for rehearsal studios and stage.

Know that feeling! Guitar Rig 4 is pretty good and I play through that and a decent pair of headphones most of the time. Used to rehearse with my band every week which was great as I'd get to run the amp at a decent volume (although sadly often a rented amp) but now I just turn up on the (very) rare occasions that everyone else is out.

Need to find myself a house with basement/garage/shed that I can convert and soundproof. It's the only way!!

**** yeah!

Seriously, I got married a couple of months ago too. My methods are:

1: wait till she's out
2: plug in the headphones.
or
3: Play the tele, as loud as I want. She loves the sound of the tele, not so with the paul.

Hope this helps. Oh and congratz.

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

If she really loves you she will understand. Try to set up far away enough to where it is not annoying people. It would also be prudent to simply ask her how she feels about it. Buy a cheap single bed and put it against the door when you want to play. It works wonders!! If you are married, it is like anything else you bring up or discuss. You can't ignore it, you have to address it. If your really good she won't say a word..LOL! She will ask when you are going to play out and start making $$$!!

Re: How do you guys deal with it?

I am building a new house with a dedicated jam room. I am using green glue sound proffing compound between, double floor boards and doule 5/8th dry wall over the whole room, and stuffing mineral wool in every gap..... Yeah, I should be able to play as loud as I want, when ever i want....

My wife works nights. I don't have this problem. Life is good.

Also I have a room in the basement that is good for jamming.
