What's the most you would ever pay for a pro setup?

I received a quote for a pro setup from a well known guitar tech (the subject of a lot of praise on these forums), at $300-$350. Guitar is a brand new LP Custom with no known defects. I don't know if i'm worthy of a setup that's worth that price! But i'm sure the pro's pay more than that.

Around $50-60 is the rate up here, I believe. Maybe the guy does a lot more work.

Do yourself a favour...buy a guitar maintenance book.

Ya, between $50-70, depending on the work. If prices in the Netherlands are anything like England for goods, double it.

Re: What's the most you would ever pay for a pro setup?

i would venture to say that there prolley is a huge difference of services rendered (there'd better be).between the 300-350 setup and the 50-70 setup.
i would expect a full overhaul of every aspect of playability for the 300-350 which should include expert fret leveling and dressing
where as the 50-70 would be a relief intonation restring and a blessing.
ive had a few guitars set up for 40 or 50 and i will never go back to either one of those"luthiers"

That would be hard to swallow unless you were doing some professional recording or being paid to play live. For that kind of money, I'd just buy an Epi to pound around on.

Yeah i just thought if i was going to spend $4000 on a LP, then it should get the special treatment. But you're right, it is a little high.

The highest price around here (the tech with the best rep) is usually about fifty bucks, add a few for nut work, add a few if there's a trem, (add a few more if it's a Floyd). Heck 300 to 325 gets a complete refret AND and pro setup. (Detroit)

For that much money ($350) you might as well just get it plekked.

my giby lp classic is at a luthier right now and i told him about the fret buzz that the guitar had after the first set up that it got from the shop i bought it at (bad set up from there) and he said well #1 the pickups are way to close so he backed them off and the buzz went away significantly. and #2 he said this is dropped tuned with thick stings so expect some buzzing (which i do expect from a drop tunned guitar 1 and 1/2 with the lowest string tuned even further down to a B) he then made a point that to me showed that he was a good luthier. he played about 2 seconds of the beginning of a chet atkins song and goes "see! right in the beginning there is a tiny bit of string buzz, and sometimes it is only normal to get that. also think of steve vai rythms where you hear that buzz." but then again my guitar needs fret crowning and leveling too so oh well

Re: What's the most you would ever pay for a pro setup?

I pay 25 dollars for a bench fee, plus the cost of parts.

They do a truss rod adj., pup adjust, intonation, and re-string it. And they oiled the fret board abit, cleaned all the electronics and tightened down my selector switch.

I have had numerous guitars set up by them and I stand by their work (as do most of the professional musicians in this area).

Course, for every body who is pleased with someting there is another who is pissy bout it, so I dunno.

I think you should just ask him what all he's going to do for that price, call around to other shops ask them their prices and what all they'd do for that price. And if the work is comparable but the $$$ is less, and you really want to use this guy, tell him what others are charging and see if he'll match them or at least come down a little. It never hurts to ask!

Re: What's the most you would ever pay for a pro setup?

I had new bone nut and tune-o-matic bridge installed w/neck adjustment, intonation set and restring for $110.00, including parts! Took 2 weeks!
The shop said $35.00, plus strings, is their basic set up fee.
Same guy did a complete refret and fret board relevel for $300.00. Took a full month!
All the work was done on a 77-78 LP deluxe at 2 different times.
The guy is a whack-o and real slow to get things done, but eveyone says he's the best in the Valley of the Sun! Worth every penny.

Re: What's the most you would ever pay for a pro setup?

I had one of my Strats set up here in the UK by a well respected luthier and it cost me £79.37 including a new bone nut. Guy did an absolutely amazing job and it was worth every penny. I supplied my own strings. I have always done it myself in the past but wanted to treat this guitar to a good setup and I am glad I did.
