Everyone needs a black Les Paul Custom.

Mine is an Orville (Gibson licensed guitars built in Japan) and will smoke everything short of the Custom Shop Reissues.

1987, I bought it in 1996, was my first Gibson

I swapped the pups for SD'59's and put locking tuners on, then had to swap the other gold parts to look as new as the tuners, added a historic truss rod cover, and changed the knobs. In fact, I think the only thing that's original is the finish!!!

I can get some more done, it was right at 1/3 the price of a new Gibson Custom, and is definitely better than the Gibson USA line guitars, it smokes my 2008 Standard, my 96 Standard and 2001 Classic hands down.

Orville is a good alternative, Gibson authorized and accurate in every detail.

Most of the Customs do have a rosewood board though, mine has an ebony board but it is not dyed so it has some streaking to it, I'm probably going to dye it to even it out. The model like mine is LPC-85 they are around $900-1100 and kind of hard to find, I looked for 2 years to find one when there were tons of the rosewood LPC75s available.
