Vintage 1957 Custom
I have friend who says he will be acquiring a totally stock 1957 Black Beauty with bigsby in the next few months for about 5 G's. Unfortunately, all I know is the price. Does this sound legit to you guys? I wanna warn him if the seller is trying to scam him.
Seems fishy to me.

Re: Vintage 1957 Custom
That would be an incredible deal if it was legit. So following the rule of "If it sounds too good to be true, it IS"...proceed with caution.
More information is needed for even educated guesses, as you know. |

But, then again, my great uncle DID buy a vintage, completely stock '61 SG for $1,200 (VERY long story)?

Re: Vintage 1957 Custom
Are you sure it's not a reissue? I own a 1959 Les Paul Standard...but it wasn't made in 1959.

so he just kept telling me that it was legit. I'll try and explain it better when I see him next.

![]() But, in any case, it IS a vintage '61 (appraised by both Gruhn and Elderly for $18-$25K)! He made me go with him to verify, and I'm still kicking myself in the ass (after 3 years) that I didn't have the money with me to buy it right out from under him! Easy come, easy go!

Re: Vintage 1957 Custom
that's like when i saw my strat in the store. this was way back when i didn't know anything about guitars. it said fender 62' reissue. i didn't know what reissue meant (not in this context) and the guitar definitely looked played and worn. so i figured that is was a legit 1962 strat. bought it for 1000$. played it, loved it. started doing research after the fact and educated myself that the guitar was just modeled after the 1962 strat specs. turns out the guitar was made in 1986. which i still nice because it's already starting to appreciate a bit.
but yeah you're friend is either confused or talking out of his ass. and in the off chance that he's not. he's about to score the deal of the century. |

Re: Vintage 1957 Custom
A '57 Custom is valued at between $25k and $45k, depending on condition and the right buyer. No way $5k buys one.

+1. Which was the case with my uncle's SG.
