Help me determine what this guitar is.

I have someone that wants to trade me a 2008 Gibson Les Paul Standard that he says has the "02" option for another guitar I have. This is supposed to mean it's a 2008 built to the older specs, not the new 2008 specs. What's the deal? How much is it really worth? Dud or Hot Item? I do have the full serial number, but out of respect to the owner, I covered the last digits.

Thanks.

Re: Help me determine what this guitar is.

I've seen similar Standards. IIRC, it was around the middle of 2008 that Gibson went to the new "2008 model" specs (locking jack, PCB electronics, etc), but before then, the Les Pauls were still made to the "2002 model" spec, which is what this appears to be. It's still a legit 2008 Standard, it just isn't the new "2008 model", as far as its specs. Confusing, I know! Either way, looks really nice, hopefully you grab it!

Re: Help me determine what this guitar is.

Gibson switched to the asymetrical neck, PCB electrics, locking jack, strap locks, etc. on the Standards mid 2008. The first Standards of 2008 were the same as the all the other Standards starting in 2002 so it should have either a 50s or 60s neck.

Something isn't right. I've never seen that paint scheme on a production LP and the wings on the headstock don't look quite right. Option "02" is used with 2010 R0s.

The serial number confirms it's a 2008 model. From what I've been able to figure out the "02" means it was built to 2002 specs, not the newer 2008 specs.

Re: Help me determine what this guitar is.

Could the "02" be in reference to the grade of the top?

Re: Help me determine what this guitar is.

Now keep in mind when I say "02" I don't mean the 02 at the beginning of the serial number. "02" was an supposedly an order option according to the owner of the guitar.

I've seen a very similar top on another poster's LP Classic, which he has since refinished.

The "02" thing is just confusing. It's just a 2008 Les Paul Standard from before they went to the modern spec (Plek, PCB, Neutrik jack, etc.).

You're cool then. Take a look at that thread for more info on that particular LP spec.

Thanks will do.

Just to clarify, by no means was I thinking Atomic was trying to pull anything over on me. I just couldn't locate any info on the guitar and figured this would be the place to find out about it.
