Wow What a difference!!

Ive been playing my lp studio deluxe through a peavey vypyr 15. Last week I bought a blues jr and have been playing through that for the past week, and the difference is jaw dropping. All you guys that have been saying that the amp makes all the difference are definitely right!

Re: Wow What a difference!!

my upside down strung left handed Mexican Strat with a SD Hotrail in the bridge sound pretty bad ass through a cranked tube amp!

In other words, you are right.

A cheaper guitar though an awesome amp will usually sound pretty awesome...an awesome guitar through a cheap amp will often sound cheap and lacking.

Re: Wow What a difference!!

There are some fairly inexpensive and good mods out there for the blues jr, I think it'd be a good amp to haul around to local jams

Google up the "billm mods". You can thank me later.

Blues Jr. and Frontman 212 (it's a solid state job but it gives you as close as you can get to Twin Reverb performance without costing you Twin Reverb dollars) are good local club amps. I played my LP Classic Antique Zebrawood through my Frontman at a club for the first time tonight and she played and sounded like butter on a muffin through the Frontman!

(I will confess---my dream amp is a Super Reverb . . . )

What were your settings on the Vypyr, just out of curiosity? The Blues Jr. is a single channel, non-master volume amp. It's a matter of plugging in and cranking it up. The pitfall of modeling tech is that you have to spend time some quality time fiddling with it. The Vypyr is certainly on the low-end of the modeling scale, but it works the same way.

Anyways, grats on the Blues Jr. You're definately seeing a real a tonal improvement over the Vypyr.

Re: Wow What a difference!!

For at-home playing and small jams I use a 1960 Gibson Gibsonette. Just 8 watts with a volume and tone control. I can run the stock 10" speaker or hook it to a 2x12 and it will sound pretty big.

When shopping for tube amps, always be on the lookout for something older, low wattage and easy to repair. They can still be had for the same (or less) than some newer amps.

(I don't own one, but unless I'm confused about what amp I was playing around with, you're wrong here).
You're both wrong.

It's a single channel amp, but has Master and Volume knobs.

Volume, volume, volume. For most guys who have tube amps for home use, pics of their gear seem to suggest they live in a house. You'd be surprised at how much the open space between houses in your average American neighborhood insulates your neighbor next door from noise. They might hear it if they walk outside, might if it's dimed, but not if they're indoors watching TV at a decent volume. You can get away with playing a small low watter tube amp at some decent volumes.

I live in an apartment. I can hear the people next door having conversations sometimes. I have a tube amp, but it can't be turned up louder than TV volume. It's far more fun and satisfying to have a decent modeling amp with cabinet simulation running through high quality headphones tweaked to simulate a cranked tube at and comfortable volumes.

For some reason, Fender SS amps are horrific to my ears. I had a Frontman that I sold very quickly.

But the tube amps are really good.
I have a Pro Jr and a Hot Rod DeVille.
