My "tele" style in the works

Not for the purists.

Got a build thread going in the luthier section, figured I'd see how the fender folks feel about this one

Like I said, not for the purists. If I wanted a real "telecaster" there's a million Fenders and even more kits or replicas out there to buy. I didn't plan on using the hockey stick neck, but I liked it with the rail pups, reflector knob and the top toggle switch. Not to mention I freakin' love the neck. Wide and chunky with a fairly flat radius.

You can say that again!

While it's not really my taste, it's pretty creative and I bet it will sound like a monster. Have fun with it!

Yup

Not for everyone, especially the purists lol

It's not the neck I had planned on using, I have an older fender neck that was intended for this. Was experimenting with different knobs and and with the reflectors and the rails, the hockey stick felt more at home then the vintage one did.

Just want to comment again: That grain is BEAUTIFUL! And black pickguards always look good on Teles! What kind of finish is on the body?

Thanks man. And I do agree: Black p/g on a tele is a must

The finish just some tint stain, have to shoot some more clear this weekend and then put it away to cure. Was waiting to shoot the clear till after all the holes were drilled and did a full assemble first. Should get clear this weekend.

Three options:

Use a lock nut (very easy)

make a custom bone nut slightly oversized and make a custom TRC that will cover the rest of rosewood over hang. (not as easy)

Put an ash or oak veneer on the headstock and use a brass nut (not as easy).

Right now I'm thinking of just using the locknut. Once its plugged in and I can scrutinize the tone I'll decide how much more time I want to invest into this project, and whether or not I'll be pulling the neck and using it for something else, something that may have a floyd and need a locknut

Cool. I like it, i think its great to create something that is yours in all respects, all that matters is that it plays well. Way to step outside the sheeple box, but

Re: My "tele" style in the works

It's great! Love the grain on that body It's wonderful to have a guitar that is exactly what you need/want. Doesn't matter if it suits anyone else or not.
Nice choice on putting the pup selector switch up top like a LP. I find my hand is always subconsciously trying to hit that spot of my tele, even though I know better!
Congrats on getting it together!

Re: My "tele" style in the works

Is the hockey stick neck the same scale length as a Tele neck?

It is a 25 1/2" scale neck, but its a "strat" pocket neck (rounded edge, not flat like a tele), so I routed the neck pocket for a strat neck and had to slightly reshape the pickguard as well.

It started as raw wood, so I didn't have to worry whether or not the neck would fit, I was carving it to fit one of the "strat" necks I had.

Oh cool! I didn't know you made the body yourself. Looks like a fun project for sure!

Yup a lot of fun. I took some liberties with the curves (mine has a rounder bottom end then the traditional tele) and added the pup switch up top ala Les Paul. Classic tele pickguard, and a slightly altered control plate with the single cut away body give it a lot of tele vibe. But it was never meant to be a traditional telecaster.

Thanks, it is some good looking wood.

I have the same problem. After playing Les Pauls for so damn long I could never get use to the pup switch being anywhere else. I've gotten rid of a few good guitars because of it. So now everything I build has the switch where I think it belongs.

Re: My "tele" style in the works

Where did you get that wood? Did you cut it yourself? How did you do it and how hard was it?

(Sorry I'm asking you so many questions in this thread. )

Re: My "tele" style in the works

The wood I've had around for a while. Building a body isn't hard, just need the right tools and patience. If you've got a router, a drill press, and a jigsaw then you can do it.
