I played my Strat for Breakfast

Jeez...

I don't think I touched the guitar in....maybe 5 months?

I pulled the natural blonde out of its case and sure as shit...in perfect tune. This isn't the first time, either. One time it sat in a case for almost 2 years...same deal.

So, I pull it out...and played it. Jesus is sounds great in the neck position. I just wish I could warm up to those other "Strat-y" tones. Especially in the bridge. (and no, I'm not gonna wire it or route it for a humbucker, nor do I think pots and caps are gonna magically warm me up to the Strat tones.)

I may have to start using this guitar again....I'm thinking it'll do great for some impending recording sessions.

Re: I played my Strat for Breakfast

As I've been saying since the good Lord put a hole in my arse.........us humans can wake up one morning , pick up a guitar and the bloody thing sounds completely different to it's previous occasions and you are in loe all over again. That's half the pleasure of owning these things. I'm on a Flying V kick at the moment. A month ago the fucking thing gave me the hump!!

Re: I played my Strat for Breakfast

I personally love my LP but my Strat clone has a very special place and it sounds and plays great. It's ok to love more than one guitar...

Also I LOVE getting up after a good night sleep, picking the guitar and play... I relly like it, probably because I'nm not stressed at all and also because I'm still halfsleep and dreams kind of help guitar playing really.

How about a base plate on the bridge pup , seeing as ya don't want to do the other things to it.

What about that Highway One? Is it confined to its case? If so, I'll gladly take it off your hands!

I also pulled the HWY 1 out. Only played it for about 5 minutes or so. It wasn't in tune...It also wasn't "talking to me" like the blonde was.

Still though...if I had to go up there and pull off a set, I'd probably prefer the HWY 1. It's got that nice, wide fingerboard for pulling off leads....

PS: I dunno what it is...I may go back to .009 to .046 on those guitars. Seems like a natural string gauge...(I don't pull a lot of bends off the High E anyway.)

All my Fenders have 9's.

Re: I played my Strat for Breakfast

I have never, even with baseplate run a strat in the bridge position. I personally think it sucks. I have always run a strat in 2-3-4 depending on what i was doing.

I personally do not like 9's on anything, I just hear a serious difference. For example I was watching the bon jovi documentary on showtime last night, and ritchie has cool licks, but plays to wet for my taste and he plays on 9's, you can just hear it on a strat based guitar.

I admit though, since getting my 52 tele I cant hardly even look at my strat, it almost makes me sad because I have loved that guitar so much, and in comparison, it sounds like strings on a plank.

Strats are great, but for me they work best with good pots, low output pups set very low, and heavy strings. Obviously this is all my opinion and not stated as fact

Re: I played my Strat for Breakfast

Try a Clapton, seriously. I plugged in a bunch of guitars the other night to see what stacked up to my LP. My Custom Shop Strats obviously didn't, not even my Deluxe LP, but my Clapton is a serious tone machine, it actually surprised me. You would think that it has humbuckers with that 21dB mid-boost circuit. I was actually thinking that Jonesy could accomplish the same effect.

Re: I played my Strat for Breakfast

I pulled out my black MIM Strat with a humbucker in the bridge on Saturday, intonated it, and played it for an hour or so. It still needs a good setup, but it played pretty well, and I was very happy with the sound. I had thought about changing the humbucker for the Burstbucker Pro out of my Les Paul Standard, but it sounded great with distortion. Lots of punch on the low end, and great chunk in the low mids. I dare say that it might even beat out my Pauls for high gain rhythm tones, at least through my Vibro Champ XD.
