Been looking at these lately' can they be played normaly? or does the scalloped neck turn it into a one trick pony???

Re: malmsteen strat; shredder only???

Ive never played a scalloped neck, but I heard they are a little different to get used to. If I were you I would look at a MIA strat of some kind, way cheaper and probably every bit as good, unless your a really big yngwie fan.

Re: malmsteen strat; shredder only???

I have a project Hondo RR V I picked up in a pawn shop that the previous owner did a scalloped to and it's now living in my closet until I get around to either changing the fretboard or scrapping the whole thing completely. I found the scallop is alright for lead playing but for rhythm it wasn't that great since some notes would end up sharp compared to others. Maybe it just wasn't my thing but I didn't see the benefits of a scalloped neck over a non.

Re: malmsteen strat; shredder only???

You just have to touch string to fret,(metal to metal),,I played one awhile back and with the Dimarzio pups I have to say it was fast and powerfull. The badest Strat Ive ever played...(Without a Floyd Rose that is,Im too set in my ways to ever change so why fight it...).Thats one awsome score my friend......

Re: malmsteen strat; shredder only???

I have one....

Its fast and very easy to play...

Here is a close up side shot.

Scalloped boards are much easier to play above the 12 th fret

Scalloped fretboards can be great if you ever get into playing microtonal music as well.

Congratulations on buying the Malmsteen sig, a great guitar, definitely one of the best Strats I've ever owned.

Here's some pics of my '98 Malmsteen and my '09 Blackmore sigs.

Cheers Johnner! wow! the sonic blue/rosewood looks awesome! and I love the look of the Blackmore how much does the Blackmore differ from the malmsteen?? I'm guessing the Dimarzios are a lot hotter?? But what about the scalloping??? much difference?

Cheers A String!

The main differences involve the Blackmore having a 3-bolt neck, 2 Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Single coils(no middle pickup) , and " gradual scalloping " of the fingerboard ( look at the pics and you'll see ).

Both Strats play brilliantly, but the sound differs a little. I find the Duncans on the Blackmore actually hotter than the Malmsteens DiMarzios. The Duncans are true single coils, not stacked coils like the DiMarzios. In fact, the Duncans remind me of P-90's, loud & punchy!
I'm hoping to get another Malmsteen Strat, in Candy Apple Red with a rosewood 'board, though yours in Vintage White is an absolute cracker! I don't know which one to go for now! lol!
