Picked up a Telecaster
So I have been hunting a Telecaster for about 2-3 years now and have finally got one. I have been trying to find a Tele deluxe plus, made between 89-92. On Ebay they usaully run $1300+, I just don't have that kind of cash to drop on one.
Well, I finallly came to terms and decided I would start lookin' for a used MIM Tele and upgrade the electronics. So about a week ago I call up at a local music shop that deals with mostly acoustic stuff to see if they might have anything in, longshot. I call up there... "Y'all have any used teles in?" The lady, "Yea, we just got in a tele plus" "Really, what year?" "1990, has lace pick ups and a tremelo bar" "Um, ok. How much?" "The price is $675" "Ok, I will be there in 30 minutes" I asked my boss if I could leave work for a few and headed up there. Turns out an older man brought it in to trade because he couldn't play it anymore. So I ended up snag'n a 1990 Tele Deluxe Plus in vintage sunburst pretty much mint condition. This thing is awesome ![]() ![]()

Score! Cool stuff man. I don't know anything about the Deluxe Plus, what separates it from a standard?

Yea, they sound great. Too bad I am still playing through a shitty practice amp, but my fellow band member has a peavy stack that I use when we play. Saving up for a real amp.

Re: Picked up a Telecaster
IMO it is not a good example of a tele . Those burst finished ash from that era are made from mulit piece poplar bodies with a veneer top and back. Lace pups, not REAL TELE pups DEN. Not real tele construction at all. Somewhere on the tdpri is a pic of one a guy stripped, scary!
They didn't play or sound too bad I had one back in the 80's I didn't know any better at the time. |

Re: Picked up a Telecaster
It is not my idea of a 'classic style' Telecaster, either, but my post was simply stating that it is dang purty!
Thank goodness we don't all like the same exact guitars, or this would be a mighty boring forum. As you can see, I like sunburst Telecasters.... ![]() ![]()

Re: Picked up a Telecaster
You could easily convert that to 'real' Telecaster pickups. A new pickguard, and an easily-made adapter plate for the bridge pickup, and that would be a COOL Telecaster with the Strat-style vibrato!

Re: Picked up a Telecaster
Case, you have a great tele...I would leave it like it is.
If you want to get a vintage style tele, just buy a regular tele with the 3 brass saddle bridge.

Re: Picked up a Telecaster
It's not really a 'collection' as much as three decent Telecasters (one's an Esquire!). None of 'em are particularly 'special' to anyone but me. The Highway 1 will most likely be sold as Christmas season approaches.

You finally found what you were looking for and I think it made for a great story. Also, it's a model I haven't seen before. Thanks for posting.

Re: Picked up a Telecaster
BTW it might have a swimming pool route because I know the Strat plus's had them. So you could experiment with different type of pickups. That Lace Red is a metal monster.

Re: Picked up a Telecaster
Nice grab! What a deal, too. I love my American Deluxe. But, I really want a Tele with three humbuckers.

Re: Picked up a Telecaster
Seems like a valid question for me. People discuss tonewoods all the time.
![]() Sorry I can't help you EEF. I had a poplar MIM tele and I've had two alder American Series teles. All three sound(ed) like teles. The pickups and hardware were different, so I can't isolate a tonal quality that I could attribute directly to the type of wood.

To me the only appropriate tone question in someone else's new guitar thread is "how does it sound?". I'm getting my first Tele in a few weeks, and I'm going mostly vintage. But "real" Teles have all kinds of pickups, including P-90s. Case, it looks great. How does it sound?
