Unless, of course, we're debating the definition of "real".

I won't try then. I'll just sit down cross-legged and learn. What characteristics qualify a modern Tele as a decent take on a vintage Tele? I'm all ears, srsly.

Well, I finallly came to terms and decided I would start lookin' for a used MIM Tele and upgrade the electronics. So about a week ago I call up at a local music shop that deals with mostly acoustic stuff to see if they might have anything in, longshot. I call up there...

"Y'all have any used teles in?"

The lady, "Yea, we just got in a tele plus"

"Really, what year?"

"1990, has lace pick ups and a tremelo bar"

"Um, ok. How much?"

"The price is $675"

"Ok, I will be there in 30 minutes"

I asked my boss if I could leave work for a few and headed up there. Turns out an older man brought it in to trade because he couldn't play it anymore. So I ended up snag'n a 1990 Tele Deluxe Plus in vintage sunburst pretty much mint condition. This thing is awesome

I haven't seen one of those in a while! One of the local shops had one that felt great and sounded nice acoustically, but I never plugged it in. It was WAY out of my price range. How does that Red Lace Dually sound?

I am just playing with ya! But really think about that for a sec., what would you qualify a modern tele as a decent take on a vintage tele. Depends on what ya want to call vintage. IMO that would be , the AVRI52 and AVRI62 custom , the Classic 50's & 60's (road worn), 69 thinline. Best decent examples. The next best modern takes , the American Standards, Squire classic vibe MIM classic players. (baja)

IMO a vintage styled tele has tele single coil pups, 7.25 radius, split tuners, 1 5/8 nut width, body made out of Pine, Alder or Ash. Ashtray bridge with 3 piece saddles brass or steel. A U or C shape neck profile.Nitro or polyester finished.

What I would call a modern take is like I said the AM standard & squier CV oh and the classic players tele.

Yes ya can keep the tele shape and put whatever pup and what not on, in it. But I don't like to call em teles after stuffs done to them. whatever.

You have to be one with the wood, before you can hear it.

Re: Picked up a Telecaster

In my Resonance thread, I asked if it was good for an electric guitar to resonate.
I was told yes...okay, I buy that.

If that is the case, different woods will resonate under the same string, same hardware - differently.
So they should have different tonal qualities.

Next question - can human hears discern the difference?

Re: Picked up a Telecaster

Hmmm.... Who said yes? I would think it is NOT good for an electric guitar to resonate, unless you're playing it unplugged and want to hear yourself play.

Yes the type of wood and also , woods of the same type , do affect the sonic capabilities of a electric guitar in different ways. But it is pretty much impossible IMO to describe that difference , some thing a person needs to hear on their own.
In General terms say ASH and ALDER. ASH is said to produce a brighter sound. With Poplar similar to Alder .But in the, as they say ,real world a person can find Alder guitars that sound brighter than ASH.

I have never had or have heard two guitars that sound exactly the same. Same model

Re: Picked up a Telecaster

I bought my Tele Deluxe new in 1990...I love this guitar, the neck and action are near perfect for me, and the lace sensors are sweet...if you get things dialed in right...IMHO, the lace sensors can sound a little sterile sometimes, but one thing for sure, is that the double red sensor at the bridge is hotter than hell. I have gone through ups and downs with the pups, and I've thought about swapping out the sensors for a pearly gates at the bridge and an over-wound Tele neck pup...Right now I'm loving it the way it is. Great guitar! Congrats!

Edit: Mines solid ash and is quite heavy.

The answer is 'no'. Not because we lack the ability.

It's just that after the myriad of variations supplied by pups and lead and amp, your ears are not the biggest variant in the puzzle.

EDIT: and that's before you factor in each player's personal style.
