Need some advice on a possible buy

Fender Telecaster " Vintage Style Custom Built ! "

I found this on craigslist and was wondering if it was a good deal?

I know absolutely nothing about Fenders.

Price seems reasonable, but only your hands and ears will know for sure. See if you can set up a time to check it out in person.

Re: Need some advice on a possible buy

I would stay away from it. There are better things out there. For the same or a little more which IMO would be better. Do you want a tele for sure or are ya just thinking you came across a deal?

If you are interested though ask the guy what the body is made from , where he got it, what pots and switch are in it.
Wahts the fret wear is like. Who custom built it.?

Well, I want a Tele in particular. And this seemed like a decent deal to me. I'll check out the link you sent me.

If money is a concern, check out the Squier Classic vibe Teles . I have one & a Classic 50's (MIM) Esquire. Also a almost built prairiecustom and another build. The Squire is a contender.

Also keep an eye out for recent 2001 up MIA series or new standards used.
The MIM classic player Baja is a great tele new quite exspensive, a better deal.

The prairie guy Marty is reasonable , you have to email him. Not 500$ for a finished guitar, but for what ya get he is reasonable.

Do you know of this forum Fender Telecaster Electric Guitar Central -- No. 1 in the World a tele forum which has a ton of info.

Could be a decent deal depends IMO on what the body is made from & condition it in (guitar). And for a vintage type tele, I like to see the three piece saddles , and one string tree which this does not have. That neck is from a late 60's RI type Japan neck , not a bad thing , but not 50's vintage.

I would be wary of it. The Squier Classic Vibe tele is a much better guitar for $350 new. That thing is a partsocaster and you have no idea what the body is made of. I'd keep looking at $500 bucks. You can get American teles for that price if you look

It's a Mexican Tele. How much do you think I could knock the price down too? $400? $350?

IMO the Squier Classic vibe is a great guitar ,just undr 400$ new here in Canada at L&M only come in one colour.. I have one it is a nice guitar L& M if ya pay cash have a 30 money back thing as lone as you return it in the same condition ya got.

Re: Need some advice on a possible buy

I would start at an offer of 275.( trade in value at a shop IMO 150-200) if the guitar was in playable condition. But be aware that the newer MIM standard that are 550. are upgraded by Fender, a little better guitar. And IMO the 05 black MIM standard vs. a Squier CV the CV comes out on top. If it didn't I would own a MIM standard and not a Squier CV!

Killer deals can be had on stuff a guy on the tele forum sold an 08 American Standard 3 tone sunburst for 475. or was it 675. ? way cheap they are 1350 new.

update: I would offer if I wanted one of those ,275 then 300 and 325 max. but don't start at the max start at the mim offer. The pickups are not the most favored in those MIM standards.

I just bought a used 2000 American Series Tele in Ocean Turquoise. Is there anything I should know about the 2000 model? I ask since you recommended 2001 and up and I thought you might know something.

2000 was a transitional year, but I clearly have an American series neck. What else can I look for?

For the OP, this tele is near mint, came with the original case (also in great condition) and I bought it after the first time I saw and played it for $699 USD. This is a buyers market. Have fun with the search and find a deal.

No I don't think any real big thing. I say 2001 cause I keep forgetting when they went from stanadrd to series ,alot of over lap in serial # decals with Fender. They usually havbe left over serial # from the previous year , and put them on guitars from the first few months (till they catch up) in the following year.So a 2000 can be a 2001, a 2007 can be a 2008. But I can't remember when they went standard to series.
You may have heard this before. So with the series, the only notable difference is the finger board edges are rolled a bit. AND with the introduction of the AM series, they offered Solid ASH on the ASH models where as previous ASH models(most of them) where several pieces with a veneer, thicker than most but not a solid ASH.

So IMO if a person was after a ASH bodied tele they would be getting the real deal for sure in and after 2001. I should have looked up when the Series guitars came out! Before I said anything I guess.

I have never seen one it seems to be a standard MIM with a few upgrades . Maybe a nice guitar they sell for 675. with gig bag + tax in Canada. So I don't know like I say never saw one; look nice made of alder ,three pups vintage style. The MIM standard has new modern hot pups (2) , I would think the blackout would sound slightly better.

I will leave that one up to you, go check it out. Offer him 350-375 see if he will go for that, before ya hand over the 400. Ask him what happened to the gig bag , they came with one.

If there is something you feel is not right with it pass on it. Lots of tele out there and more every week.
