Strat Pickup Suggestions?
So, now that I finally have a chance to focus on my Strat project (Spent time amp hunting for a bit), I find myself in need of a set of pickups. I'm running a Fender Super-Sonic and play Classic Rock. I'm looking for Clapton and SRV type tones, but would appreciate it if they could also be pushed a bit harder. Non-sterile cleans would also be nice. I don't have the budget for anything boutique, but other than that, pretty much all my options are open.
Thanks in advance

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
IMO especially with single coils the hotter you wind them the more single coil magic you take away.
I know you said you don't have enough for boutique pickups but I did have a set of Curtis Novak single coils at one stage. They were truly beautiful for Knofler, Clapton type stuff. I'm more into Hendrix, Frusciante type Strat tones and CS69's obviously work wonders for that type of thing. There is a bloke in Australia. Slider. Slider's Vintage 59 Pickups for Stratocaster, Strat SRV - eBay Guitar Parts, Parts Accessories, Guitar, Musical Instruments. (end time 02-Jul-09 07:21:42 AEST) This guy got a big pat on the back from I think it was the Tone Quest report? I have not used these but I would certainly check them out if you could afford it, they certainly look the part. Good luck mate.

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
They were on my list and I almost bought a set last week, but I wanted to see what other options I had.
Thus, let the thread continue. :P |

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
I would personally look at the fat 50's before the texas specials.

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
I did run across a site, I think it was ACME guitar works. It had quite a few clips from various winders. I'll try and find you the link.

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
Wow, that's a cool link. Thanks, Pinkbits. I'm really diggin' those fat 50's right now. I need to search for some slightly more overdriven examples now.

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
I'd say Try "GFS PREMIUM ALNICO HOT STAGGERS"
I put them in my strat plus instead of the lace sensors that were in there. I'm very happy with the result. And the price was very friendly. I got them when GFS was just starting up online. Strat and Tele Pickups http://store.guitarfetish.com/stovalstpise.html

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
Fralins are good. I have bought set-ups from Rothsteins before, though never for Strat: Rothstein Guitars • Serious Tone for the Serious Player
So are Mick Brierley: Brierley Hand Wound Guitar Pickups. I have these on parts-o-caster. If you want something relatively easy to obtain, cheap and out of a box, I recommend the lace sensors, which appear in the strat plus circa late 1980s-90s. search on ebay. |

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. I'm gonna bookmark this thread because I figure that it'll be in my best interest to go after things like the neck and bridge first, then electronics.
Peace.

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
i have fender gold lace sensors in my partsocaster... they came stock in my 96 strat plus deluxe, which now has fender texas specials... i recommend both... the tex specials are a bit more raw... while the golds are a bit smoother... if that makes any sense lol
i think i lean a bit more towards the sensors though as far as my favs https://melodymusiconline.com/index....7f9801c4f3603f

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
I'd highly recommend a harmonic design super 90 in the bridge. No icepick at all, just pure single coil burls.
Also if you don't need to buy all 3 together you can find the "boutique" guys pickups pretty cheap used on ebay or craigslist one at a time.

Re: Strat Pickup Suggestions?
Thanks Bling, I was considering Lace Sensors too. The B/S/R set caught my eye.
No icepick? Hmm...I might have to look that too. |
