Blocked my trem, thanks for the idea whoever posted it ages ago. PICZ

well I remembered a tip someone posted back when I joined and I used the idea, just a tip to remember these little tips from our experienced luthors and players.

just a cut block of red gum (hard as all hell Aus native hardwood) cut 1mm less than the perimeter of the trem block and exactly 10.5mm thick (the space between my trem block and the body, yours may be different) this transfers allot of the vibration to the body, I didn't finish the block in anything, some woods will need to be finished with something to stop it from cracking, this piece was cut from a very solid block. the springs where let off a little more and the block is what is stopping the trem from moving.

so yeh, easy trick to turn a tremolo into a relatively good hard tail.

as always, pics

don't find myself using it at all really.

they don't sell hard tails any more as a standard.

Wow.... this is too ironic for me... I just got my Fender Standard Strat back today from the shop and the tech lowered the bridge making it completely flush with the body. Is this common? I never used the trem bar anyways... (I'm not good enough yet to start that stuff). Just wondering.. Thanks.

I use mine, but mine isn't floating. Its flat on the body but I can dip ti down, I just can't pull it the opposite direction. I keep 3-5 springs on her and I have no tuning problems

A properly cut and lubed nut, and as few string winds as possible will solve most tuning roblems on any guitar.

once I started stringing like this,

My guitars have super stable tuning, I know I've said this several time before, but its worth repeating, all the extra winds on the posts are a major culprit for tuning stability, a ton of winds will never get all the stretch out, few winds and a natural lock as shown has worked wonders for me, plus its a lot quicker and easier to string up. The pic is from my Gretsch 5120, I had all kinds of trouble staying in tune using the trem till I switched to thos method, now I can yank and slam the arm as hard and as often as I want and tuning is solid, I use this methos on all my guitars except for my slotted post vintage strat tuners , but still use very few winds on them as well, you just lock the string differently.

Block it....with five springs, screw 'em in tight, and take the arm off.

that was a dam ordeal, I got one in, and the thread for the arm wasn't cut properly, was crosscut at the factory, sent it back got another one, they tried it at the store to make sure it was ok and then sent it to me, their tech guy is a moron, he forced the arm in and screwed the thread, I spat the dummy, said BUGGER IT! so I blocked it off, I'm ok with it.

I can set it up, I was tort, my father made a point of teaching me what he knew and then getting a few techs to teach me what they knew including a good family friend who worked with bands.

I'm not happy with the thread cut on the MIM trem block, that's all and because I can't et a dam good one in I spat the dummy and blocked it.

Gee sorry to hear that did you get the U.S. RI block. I had thought it mentioned but the Stock block and arm made by Ping has a different thread size than most every other on the market. And ya need a new arm with the correct thread size. Also for what ever aftermarket block watch the tread size. But now that some one has buggered it i guess its too late. Ya say the tech at the store buggered it, maybe they can send you another block and the arm that is suspossed to go with it. In case ya may some day want to use the trem. IDK

I still subscribe to the pre-1982 penny method but there's nothing wrong with a solid block of alder/mahogany/basswood/ash/other tone wood

[QUOTE=Iceman0124;890536]A properly cut and lubed nut, and as few string winds as possible will solve most tuning roblems on any guitar.

once I started stringing like this,

I blocked mine by using 5 heavy springs so it does not move at all when I do bends.

I never had any tuning problems when I still hat the bridge set up floating style.
My problem was that when I played double stops and would bend one note, the other string would go out of tune. Generally speaking if I would bend a note a half step you could hear the droppedpitch of the other notes....

.....I cannot deal with that. Sounds bad! I still like the ringing, chorus/reverbish kind of sound of the trem though. Even though it does not move on my guitar and the plate is flush against the deck you can stil hear it is a guitar with a trem.

Good point. Another down side to the floating trem is if you're playing live somewhere and break a string in the middle of a song, you are really up a creek.

Ice is right on the money with the pegs. I wind mine 3 times only on all my guitars. On my Strat I use my Trem and she stays in tune perfectly.

Locking tuners, a good nut (or one of the late 80s, 90s LSR roller nuts) will do it fine. You can use combinations of these, if you do not want to pay for the strat plus which has these features.

-- there are other ways to use the trem, besides merely blocking it.
