Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
They are pretty much the same guitar, but one has a humbucker in the bridge. Humbuckers are fatter sounding and generally have more output than single coils.

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
If you find a 2006 or older HSS you can get a Standard with the S1 switch the same one that is only available in the Deluxe models now. With the S1, in addition to other additional combinations, you can split the bridge pickup humbucker. I have several strats, but my HSS S1 is up there on the " grab " list.

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
Not the American ones i think Mexican. The ones you can get for around $500. Im figuring out if I should get the HSS or Reg if I already have an Epiphone LP

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
Alright. Cuz the hard rock I play the LP is perfect for, but the blues.. well it cant compare with a strat IMO. Thanks.

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
I just got my 2008 Fender Strat back from the guitar shop. It was originally an HSS. I switched out the humbucker for a songle coil to go with the classic SSS. I felt since I have an EPI LP I had no need for the humbucker in my Strat. I guess it really comes down to what you are looking for as far as tone goes out of that bridge pickup.

FWIW - If you dig you can find these on the cheap side - the Shoreline I got for $700 from a retailer unloading on Ebay and the 2004 / Sunburst for $600 on Superbowl Sunday - mint condition. |

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
I've got an 80's Jap Strat with a US DH-1 humbucker in it. It sounds good, but in general I'd go for single coils on a Strat, because you'll never get that thick Gibson sound out of it. A good Strat through a good amp, played loud, has a unique ballsy bluesy sound. That is a big part of it though - Strats need pushing to sound at their best - so PLAY LOUD!!

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
If your buying new I'd checkout the squire classic vibe line, IMO they kill the mexi's in everything except pots, switch and wire, plus if you want to go humbucker later, the bodies are routed for them in the bridge position. The stock pups on both models are great, and playability, fit and finish are top notch (barring my bad RW board on my first 60's, it still sounded and played great though) IMO I think they are much better guitars than the mexi's regardless of price, plus the needed upgrades are cheaper as well.

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
Thumbs down based on what? Have you even played or seen one in the flesh?
I own 2 and can honestly say I've never seen nor played a new mexi that sounded better, looked better, felt better, and had better detailing, and I've been in this game 25 odd years, the classic vibes are awesome guitars hands down, if you want to pay considerably more and do more extensive upgrading and finish work to have "fender" on the HS, thats totally up to you, but if your going to discredit my statements, your gonna have to back it up buddy. Doesnt cut it, explain please. |

And putting a humbucker in a Strat does not make it sound like an LP. IMO they are two different types of tone derived from different scale lengths and construction. Both are good. Just different.

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
I got to ask. Why have a middle pickup when you run a humbucker. why not just split the coils, or just do away with it all together. I did and I love it.
![]() Thats a shot of my custom built with a 3 way I absolutely love it.

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
It depends on one's pickup choices and overall goals. In one of my Strats, I want a vintage single-coil sound from the neck and middle positions, so I have Vintage Rails there. I put a Pearly Gates HB in the bridge position because I want that Strat to sound really hot when I engage position 5. Splitting off one of its coils would not give me a vintage sound in the middle position the way the Vintage Rail does.

The inbetween mid plus positions are my fave strat tones, even with a humbucker you can still get the neck mid combo wich is what I use the most. Love the finish on your strat, are you going to get a guard cut for your mods or leave it as is? Personaly I'd want a new guard cut, just looks ufinished, or at the very least throw an unwired dummy pup in there. |

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
I like her just the way she is. I have traditional style strats as well, so this is m Ugly Betty. And she is my favorite.

Re: Fender Standard Strat vs. Fender HSS Strat
I thought about making her finished looking but all my others are and they just don't have the same feel to them. So she stays the same. I might try a white pickgaurd that I have but the beater 50's look I am kind of digging on.
