Really you gotta try a few and find what fits "you" . The pups in my classic vibes are keepers for sure, more so than the pups, changing the electronics, pots, switch, jack, caps, tear out the old cheap wire and put in nice cloth wire etc will really "wake up" whatever you have in there already.

You can put in "clones" of jimi's or SRV's, that doesnt mean you'll get their tone, what is it you dont like about the stock pups? i've found that outside the really cheap squires, the stock pups range from decent to very good.

I strognly urge you to rewire your guitar first, put in good pots and other components, then play around with hieght and angle of your stock ones before replacing them "just" because they are "stock", there are also lots of other "tone tricks" like removing the back trem cover (It makes a norticeable diff to my ears), to lossening the neck plate screws a 1/4 turn while the guitar is tuned to pitch, retune, and tighten the screws back, this helps get the heel of the neck tighter in the pocket improving tone and sustain, on some bolt ons it works wonders, on others it doesnt do much of anything.

Pups are only a small part of the tonal equation, what amp are you using? A nice lower wattage tube amp is really well suited for strats and teles to get that glassy smooth tone, you could take Stevies personal guitar, and run it through a solid state marshall, or even a big modern JCM tube marshall....and you wont sound like Stevie.....

Custom Shop 69s are really nice. I had a set of them in my CP 60's and They are hands down my favorite custom shop PU I have played.

Have fun with it, lots of cheap fairly easy things you can do find "your" sound. I actually just had another "happy accident " changing a cap in my 50's vibe, dunno exactly what I did, but I like it! I would have taken a bit more of a subtle appraoch, the "arm wear" doesnt look like arm wear....just looks like someone went nuts with an abrasive.

Personally I would have just left it alone, but the key to relicing is to make iot look natural, like the "damage" happend over years of playing and road abuse, getting slammed in the case, dropped, and just getting the hell played out of it, dirt, grime and dings more than paint stripping looks more realistic to me.

I went for more "dirt" and tried to get finish removal to look as natural as I could, I used really light grit for the sanding, it took forever at aguess around 12 hours plus of sanding, but gave m,e alot more control over the pattern and IMO a more natural look.

I have got two ProTones Strats. One with Floyd Rose plus humbucker at the bridge. For the money both of them are my "best buy". I upgraded the 3-single coil one with Callaham trem, Fender Texas Custom pickups plus Earvana nut. It is an absolute killer guitar.
Both are fairly skinny when it comes to the necks. So, if you can get along with that you may tweak these guitars in to something pretty outstanding.
I have a Custom shop Fender, beat to death with Rolphs to compare to. And although I love that guitar the upgraded ProTone is the one I end up with...
