NXC1978 60's Daphne Blue Stratocaster Guitar Build
Nick contacted me about doing a 60's daphne blue with sunburst underneath.
Fender did this for two reasons. One, sunburst was standard and anything else was considered a custom ordered color so having the burst bodies ready just saved some time. Two,its easy to make a mistake on sunbursts so rather than waste a body they would just primer them and paint over it. Here are some pictures to get Nick fired up about his build. Raw body, alder 2 piece offset seam ![]() ![]() Next a bit of sand and sealer and on with the burst amber.Pics may appear a bit more orange but sunburst just photographs that way. ![]() ![]() Next the outer black band. ![]() ![]() Next the burst transition area. And despite what you might think this is not red but a medium brown. When the red content of the brown hits the center yellow you get the orangish red.Multiple passes of this give you the dark brown almost black transition. The only real black is the outer edge. There is no clear on this and thats why the transitions may not seem smooth. When the clear is on it smooths everything together. ![]() ![]() Now just a coat of sand and sealer and a coat of nitro primer. ![]() More to come............ Damn Scotty! I may have to get in touch with you when my funds recover a little bit. Nice work so far!
Are you going to do a relic on this beauty to reveal the sunburst underneath - or is it just going to be a secret? ![]() I'll be keeping an eye on this thread! |

I will. It'll be after this summer I think. I have Roman building me a telecaster right now - so I need to get that all wrapped up first. I'm really impressed with your work and your prices are very reasonable. Keep up the good work in the mean time!

Yeah its took a little longer than I wanted but I want this to be perfect for Nick and be completely cured when it ships.
The next step will be to wet sand and bring it up to a closet classic look.Shine but with some swirl marks as if it has been played and wiped down over the years. |

Re: NXC1978 60's Daphne Blue Stratocaster Guitar Build
Well the time has come and the daphne Strat for Nick is done.
I have brought it up to a medium buff so there are a few scratches on it like you would find on a closet classic.I suspect when Nick gets done it will be a lot worse. ![]() ![]() The fit of the pickguard it real good around the pocket but these pickguards can vary a bit so if you need to take a bit off just sand the guard on the upper side a bit. This one is good though. ![]() Neck fit is perfect. There is just enough room to scew it a millimeter or so if you should need to. ![]() ![]() Guard is perfect around the trem. When you put your trem screws in do the 2 outside ones first.I suggest no drill drivers.Just do them by hand and guide them to keep them straight because they will try and guide themselves sometimes.Same goes for the pickguard screws. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It has a fair amount of shine to it.So if there are spots you want more shine just hit it with some McGuiars scratch X or oif you need it more dull you can use some 4/0 steel wool, some newspaper and even some dry dirt rubbed on it does well. I am sure you are going to sand it down to the burst in some areas so I wouldn't go any more course than P400 grit.Always P grade papers and 3M brand if you can get it.Even though this is thin it will seem like forever until you sand thru. You just have to be patient with it. If you need any help or suggestions please ask.And Thanks. |

Excellent!!! It's exactly what I wanted and you did a hell of a job just like I knew you would sir!!!
I will take all the advise you can give. I will be taking the relic process real slow. |

As a huge Fender fan I've really enjoyed this build thread! Just to clarify, this was a body only, right? What sort of neck and electronics do you plan to affix to it?

Re: NXC1978 60's Daphne Blue Stratocaster Guitar Build
Hey kspeed, we've kind of got two threads going on this thing! Here's the link to the other one with photos and info...
Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build @ aidb: Hello aidb-rother! I am putting Custom Shop Texas Specials in it, at least for now anyway. I plan to leave this guitar tuned down half a step with 11's so I can jam along to my favorite Hendrix and SRV backing tracks.I just picked up a 65 Reissue Fender Deluxe Reverb from a nice guy off of Craigslist after work last night! It should sound good with the Texas Specials!!
