John5 Gear Tour - Guitar World Ask J5 about Tele's he has em all! In the 2nd clip he shows off all his Tele's, a few with your "cool" color!
But wait for about clip 6 where he plays one, showing that you can shred and tremalo w/o a trem on a Tele!

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
I have not seen a set neck Tele. I'm pretty new to them (and Fender in general) - but I do see myself getting another Tele before too long.
I wonder if J5's couch is leather? Leather is not very kind to Nitro - which many of his Teles are finished in... I hope he just has them on display for that shoot, and doesn't keep them there all the time! |

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
I got the sticker online - zazzle.com or something - I was just looking for "poop" related stickers until I found one that I liked! That one IS perfect. I don't think I'll be doing any more upgrades to this thing. If I do, it'll be tuners first, then possibly a bridge from GFS.

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
Oh yeah I like! The binding on the neck is what I like that and the back stain is real nice, kinda like a LP standard?
Mine has that same wiring set up too with the push / pull on the humbucker and rear loader.

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
I just got what I and a local guitar guy think is a 1983 Nashville Tele. I have some questions about it as I haven't been able to find it in any of the "books". If I post a pic here, can someone give me some ID on it? I had a 1974 natural finish Tele, but traded it back in 1980ish for an amp. Wish I still had that one.

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
New tuners (eliminating the need for string trees) and a new bridge - both from Guitar Fetish. Tuners went right in - just had to drill guide holes for the set screws. The bridge was very close - not perfect, but good enough. I jammed toothpicks in the holes, and then I just ran the screws in with an electric driver (about 1/2 of the hole was lined up...). I did have to use my stock saddle height adjustment barrels as the ones provided were too damned short for hte middle 4 saddles. Overall, well worth the $$ IMO.

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
Here's my new telecaster. S/N E316844 says 1983 Nashville. I've been unable to find it in the blue books" however. Anyone have any insight?

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
I took it to a local geetar store. They said it's a 1983 Tele Deluxe Nashville. But, they couldn't find any info on it in any of their books.
Any thoughts?

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
If you're going to talk about strange looking Telecasters, I can't leave this one out. Steve Morse, simply the best, played a home built axxe that had a Tele body. Below is a pic and a description from the Steve Morse website.
Steve crafted a guitar for himself, combining the elements for his ideal instrument: a Fender Telecaster body, Stratocaster neck, Gibson Tune-o-matic bridge, a set of Gibson frets, a 12-string tailpiece (make unknown), and a group of pickups (also unknown). He called it the Frankenstein Telecaster, and constantly revised and improved it over the years.

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
I'm going down the very same road as you, Dice, tomorrow. I need a cheap beater Tele that I can dissemble and pack in my luggage when I travel back and forth between Norway and Slovenia. The baby-shit yellow Tele is damn appealing to me, so tomorrow I'm getting one.
I also plan to change the pickguard to black. Which one did you get from GFS, and did the holes for it line up as they should? It's not the end of the world if I can't get all the screws in there, as long as it stays put. |

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
Good call, brother. You'll like it, I'm sure. I really like mine still.
I got the 8 hole 3 ply guard from GFS - I had to redrill 2 or 3 holes (they lined up with about 1/2 of the existing hole) - and had to ever so slightly widen the cutout for the control cavity (I just used a pocket knife and scraped off a little bit of either end of the cutaway). |

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
As said, as done, here it is:
![]() Plays great, no sharp fret ends or anything. Just one thing is bugging me, and that is that one of the string trees are buzzing when I play certain notes. It's not a big deal and is probably an easy fix, so no worries. Mine's from Indonesia, a '08 model. Oh, and the first thing I'll do when I get home is to oil the fretboard, it's way dry! I also tried one of those with a black guard, maple fretboard and two P90s. It was brighter acoustically and sounded really cool plugged in, but I really just wanted simplicity this time around. I'll get myself a Junior or Special if I want a P90-equipped guitar.

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
Congrats! Baby Shit's brother...
I LOVE this guitar - money well spent if you ask me. I did eliminate the middle string tree w/ GFS tuners. I can almost get away with not using any trees, but the high E was pretty borderline, so I put it back on. New bridge and tuners and I am very happy with the guitar - $60 in upgrades (plus the guard, which was $17 shipped). |

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
I agree, it's a great little thing to just play around with and the pickups didn't sound too bad when I played it through a Fender Deluxe amp of some sort in the store either. Such a relief to not have to worry about the headstock having enough support when laying it down and such, too! I also ended up flipping the control plate, kept hitting the switch with my hand.
All in all definitely worth the money for my intended use of it! |

Re: My new Tele is Ugly.
Pickups are decent for sure. I have nothing to complain about with this guitar, really. The one piece neck was a pleasant surprise for sure. Great fretworks. Resonant body. A couple of hardware upgrades are all that is needed in my opinion - (and not really needed, in all honestly. The GFS bridge/tuners were an improvement, though).
