Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
This project is looking great! The wear on the hardware all looks good to me! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
Got the guitar mocked up yesterday. Everything fit together very well and I didn't have any major hangups. The pickguard needed a bit of trimming at the neck pocket, but Scotty warned me about this. The bridge and other hardware lined up perfect, the neck fits snugly in the pocket, and I can't really complain!!

Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
According to my little plan, the next step is to disassemble it and get it ready to fade. I am going to install the trem cover and a pickguard and then sun fade the body. Here is an example of what I will be trying to accomplish...
![]() This will also allow the nitro to really cure. It is still emitting fumes so I probably wouldn't want to freeze check it at this point anyway. |

Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
Well, lucky for me the weather here in N. Texas has been really sunny, but not too hot. Using a roll of masking tape as a pedestal, I have been leaving the body out on my shed for the last three days, flipping it over every day. Not counting this morning it has about 10 hours on each side. Not sure how long it will take, but I would like it to fade just a bit so that when I leave the trem guard off you will be able to see the fade. Also, it seems to be drying out the nitro.

Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
Hi Nick,
I'm sure I read somewhere that some peeps use a sunbed to try and hurry up their guitars fade. Just a thought. |

Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
Yes, I have read about this too. I live in N. Texas where the sun is relatively intense. In the past week we have had nothing but sunshine here so I have been able to keep it out all day for the past 4 days. After today, it will have 20+ hours on each side.
The tanning bed is a great idea. I might need to do that if the weather turns. I don't know much about tanning beds, but are they more intense than the actual sun?! If so, I'm glad I haven't stepped foot in one! There is another member here, Nicola is his user name I believe, and he lives in Honduras where the sun is really intense. It took him about 78 hours to fade his Les Paul. I don't think it will take that long for this, well hopefully not! |

Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
It'll be tough to get that much fade naturally.Blue doesn't fall out like red or yellow.part of it is a time thing as much as a sun thing.

Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
If you can swing it I'd let it sunbath for the better part of two weeks at least. The finish will take the beating more than the body, which is what you're after, anyway.
I know you're anxious to get this thing together, especially with that sweet neck being ready to go, but patience is key

![]() The nitro is already starting to look the part just from a few days in the sun. It's starting to shrink to where you can see some of the wood grain and the body seam. No fading as of yet though. It is really, really, hard all the waiting to unvail that burst!!! |

Re: Parts-o-caster 60's Strat copy build
Put it in a guitar shipping box & wire it hanging inside now cut & insert a hole for a large soda bottle in bottom of box. The bottle cut a hole in side near the bottom & set a tuna size can insde & put lit cigarettes in & Nicotine the finish to similate 100's of bar gigs. be sure to have hole in top of box to drawl the smoke up & out.

I think I am going to ride this train out for a few more weeks. I am thinking if it doesn't fade then at least the laquer will be good and dry and ready to freeze check. If it won't freeze check then I will have to sort my options. |
