Mine seems to have a snappier tone with the toploader.

Re: Jimmy Page on a Tele

When I first put together my Esquire-Gib, it had a vintage Strat hardtail bridge on it, and it was stiff as hell. Felt like it took 3 times the force to bend a freakin' string a half-step. I hated it.

Now it's got a chopped vintage Tele bridge top-loader, and it's really slinky feeling. I wonder if the much shallower break angle has something to do with it.

Strat bridge...

Tele bridge...

Thanks, Dice!! I wired it up as a traditional Esquire, bit I used 500k pots. It's actually quite usable like that.

I don't truly remember, I think something like $160 for the neck, about $200 for the body, about another hundred for the hardware and plastic. Something like $500 total.

I did all the finishing myself, and I already had the pickups, it was built solely as a home for the minibucker, which ended up sounding like ASS in it!!! Hence the 490T which resides in there now. I might put the P-90 back in the neck, I think I'm missing it.

I remember reading in an interview a while back he prefered the tone and feel of the strings on bends with it toploaded. Changes the angle slightly.

I have solid ash string through body on my tele like his, with a wilkinson vintage ashtray bridge. I always top load mine. I like the feel. Maybe it's a bit more twang too.

On a side note, I think he mostly uses string through currently, although most of his tele's are equiped with a bbender.
