not a strat guy....why

ok, I played an EJ strat and I liked it alot but, still just can not get that whole strat thing...if I was stuck with the EJ it would be fine but, I would always want a tele or prs insteed...(or a LP)

there was a used robert cray which I also played...I really liked the feel of the neck...and it had all those RC type tones....I also liked it alot but, once again I am not a strat guy....the guitar was going for 400$ and I still would not buy it

One thing is that the highs on a strat pop out too making it very hard for me to play smoother sounding stuff....I can do it but I have to really watch my pick attack and strength...I did this but, it made my head hurt because I had to focus so much and even then I made mistakes and a note would pop out.....could I get used to this and play a softer jazzesound and then dig in and get a that chimy bite, yes...but it so much easyier to do that on any of my other guitars...

(only thing I can think of doing is move the PUs up a little and that might make all the difference in the world...)

feel free to tell me what you think...am I crazy? am I missing something? a lot of my "heros" have played starts...Jimi, JB (not always), Richie Blackmour...

Re: not a strat guy....why

I've always felt the guitar sounds better with the pickups lowered.

Some dudes lower them until they are almost even with the pickguard! Mine aren't that low, but get get mellower when they are lowered.

Geez, I used a form of the word "lower" five times in one post.

Re: not a strat guy....why

guitars are subjective....what's right for some isn't right for others....I love my strat but it's been sitting in a stand for most of the last year since I got my BFG......I will go through a phase where the BFG gets old and I'll pick up the Strat for a few days.......but sometimes if you're used to the sound and way a guitar reacts to your playing switching from a LP to a strat would be different......I know I get inspired when I pick up my strat now because it's different from what I've been used to.....

Re: not a strat guy....why

I think that you haven't played the "right" one. I wasn't a Strat guy until I got my Custom shop. When I played it, I had to play a few others to make sure I wasn't loosing it. Nope, wasn't loosing it. The other Strats did nothing.

Re: not a strat guy....why

I like Strats and use them for one main reason-selector switch position #4.
As per the actual PLAYING of the guitar-I like a Les Paul much better.Way better.Or any other Gibson.
Les Pauls are my favorite guitars.
The only minus with an LP,to me,is that they don't sound good at low volumes.Strats sound good at any volume.
I'm getting older now,and the Strat isn't hand-friendly to me.It makes my fingers hurt.I'm planning on trying a conversion neck, that makes it the same scale length as an LP.Never actually cared for the Strat's scale length-LP's are so much easier on the hands.
The weight of an LP isn't an issue to me.

Re: not a strat guy....why

It took me twenty years to find a Fender I liked.
I had an experience Like Jomo. One spoke to me, all the others did not.
Be patient.

We all need one, but for many of us, there can never be enough Gibsons in our arsenals.

Re: not a strat guy....why

I have a MIM RC Strat and I love it!
I've allways been a Gibson man, myself. Played an LP deluxe for years.
I never took Fender's seriously. Looked down my nose at Fender players.
But ... I yearned for something different. I was in a rut
I went to all the local music stores and played as many different strats as I could get my hands on. The EJ strat was very nice. The EC Strat was nice. Didn't really care for the SRV strat. American standards were great, but personally I would have a hard time spending $900-$1000 on Strat. Most of the mid $$$ Strat models were pretty good, too! Out of all of them I played and compared $$$ to, I picked a brown burst Robert Cray Strat. The combo of the pups, neck shape, Rose wood fret board and no vibrato sold me.
I play the RC Strat as much as I play my LP's now. I can get close to those SRV tones. Some things you need that strat bark for. Some things you need that singing sustain of the LP.
I chose both !

Re: not a strat guy....why

tone controls , strats have em as do amps. put a .047 -.1 cap pio in a strat with vintage spec pups & it will do it all. The brightness you speak of is a good thing to have when called on in a live setting helps cut through when needed. At home or what ever, tone controls fix that ,ya got em use em.

Lowering to taste as talked for is good. Also the volume control set back a bit takes the edge off, turn back up for solos etc. Pure nickel strings can mellow a strat out some.

But hey some never will own one if its not the guitar for you then its not. IMO if you want to try and bond with one get a used one that suits you somewhat speaks to you as they say, that way ya won't lose reseling . That Robert Cray @ 400$ is a good deal IMO popular model should resell quick. They come with good custom shop MIA pups.

Re: not a strat guy....why

I don't like having to touch my Amp except to turn it on and adjust the volume. I'll spend months getting it right, but once it's right I like to leave it be.

I never had a Strat that I didn't have to touch my amp to make it sound right. Right of course was basically less trebly. I started playing the Strats on Neck + Middle only. It occurred to me I really just didn't like Strats. Then I got this G&L S500 with David Gilmour EMGs in it. It is amazing. It took about 2 weeks to get it dialed in but I can use ALL 3 pickups now!

So with that I grabbed my son's 3/4 Squire. I spent about 20 minutes fiddling with the Tone knobs. It did NOT suck. I had a buddy with an American come over. I plugged it into my Lone Star and starting from the Volume, Tone, Tone settings on my son's 99USD Squire I was able to hit the sweet spot in a few chords.

Two things came out of this.

1) My buddy ordered his own Lone Star
2) I'm thinking I might want another G&L but with their pickups in it

Re: not a strat guy....why

It's because like me you know a good guitar

It's just preference. Again, like yourself I don't mind em, however they are not my guitar of choice in the slightest. If I was given a Gilmour strat for Christmas, I'd sell it for a USA Standard Tele.

Re: not a strat guy....why

I was never fond of strats until I found a sweet '79 hardtail. The neck on it fits my hands just right, and I loaded it with Rio Grande pups. Sometimes it is just the right guitar for the job.
