My New '65 Jaguar

Just in from Illinois, left on my front step by the good people who don't give a crap about your guitar at USPS - and I couldn't be more excited. I usually don't look at my front door on a given day, so this baby was almost left outside over night!!! I wasn't expecting it to arrive until tomorrow.

1965 Jaguar, original finish, after market pups (by Curtis Novack) and wiring, and in great shape. Plays like a dream Great frets. Brazzy board. Humbucker routes under the original pickguard - like I care! Original case is in great shape as well.

This beauty was listed on Ebay under "acoustic guitars" - I won it for $1550!!!!!

I'm off to band practice to put it through its paces...

I thought there would be no way in hell that I'd win this thing for the little bid I put on it.

Re: My New '65 Jaguar

Nice score. I'm more of a jazzy fan but you got really nice deal on a sweet guitar. I wish the jazmaster had the cool chrome plates on the pickguard. Some nice guitars with non dealbreaking issues out there right now. Congrats! Crank it with a good fuzz.

Re: My New '65 Jaguar

Thanks guys - I just got back from band practice. I used the Jag on 5 songs and it was very cool. It really "cuts" and has a raw scream to it. My playing style really requires a lot of sustain, which the Jag is lacking. It also has some flatwound 12's on it, and I generally play with wound 10's - so bends didn't work out quite as well as I'm used to w/ the Paul. I didn't intend for it to be something that I play out with in the band setting though - I think it'll be a lot of fun for blues. Its my first Fender ever, and I'm digging it so far. I've never really liked Strat look, but the Jaguars and Jazzmasters have always caught my eye.

Fus44 - there really are some great deals out there lately on Ebay. Its a good time to buy, if you can afford to. (I can't, but I'm selling off a bunch of crap to pay for it as I can't pass up a good deal!).

I want a jazzy so bad I'm debating buying a squier jagmaster and puting some Duncan Phat Cats in.

I really like the burst on the Jags / Jazzmasters. This was one of the last years that Fender used Nitro (I think they were using Polyester by '67 or so?) - up close it has fine checking throughout and plenty of battle scars. From 10 feet away, it looks new.

One thing is for certain - compared to my Les Pauls, this guitar seems like its a tank. I don't see a spill cracking the headstock off of this thing or anything like that!

If anyone reads this and has a Jaguar - let me know what string gauge you're using. I'm debating lightening up some, but I've read that they were designed to use 12's or 13's - I'm thinking about 11's possibly - the flatwound 12's are a little stiff.

I'll bet you can find a used MIJ for $500-600...? Might be worth the little extra $$.

Re: My New '65 Jaguar

It might, but I am broke. I'm looking at having to sell my Standard... to recoup some cash, so maybe I could get trade into a squier jagmaster and get some cash over the top to even it out... I dunno though..

I hear you man... I'm selling off some military gear that I no longer need - may sell an extra upper assembly for an AR-15 that I have. It may come down to selling off an Elitist (again! ) although I'm trying to avoid it. As it gets closer to Christmas, if I haven't recouped the funds for this Jag, I'll be putting a few guitars on the chopping block (mostly cheaper stuff that I never play) and will blow out the Elitist if it means having a good Christmas for the kids. I didn't think I'd win this guitar - but I'll be damned if I was going to let it pass me by at the price I got it for!

Yeah, I've got a Tele body in the works with Roman, so I need some funds to complete the Frankentele he's whipping up for me, and I just finished Christmas shopping for the most part, but the Standard is probably going on the chopping block as soon as I work up the nerve...

Probably have to do a partial trade though just to move it considering how hard it is to move guitars anymore... Epi's at least.

Thanks Stryker!

DJ - I'll bet that Tele ends up being cool! It is a tough time to sell, but a great time to buy. Strange how that always seems to be the case...

The tele should be sweet. Custom vintage wound Seymour Duncan in the bridge, p90 in the neck, MIM Strat neck, mahogany body, and a Jonesy special wiring kit, cloth wire, 'bee, 4 way switch.

I just wonder what kind of things I should accept on trade to get what I need in cash. I need to get 300 out of it with the case, but with the price hikes for new ones, I figure I could get that plus a decent trade.

Re: My New '65 Jaguar

Good call on the Strat neck - Tele headstocks always turn me off.

You might try selling the case separately... You may end up w/ more $$ in the end??

Nah, I hate shipping a guit without a case...

She's in the classifieds now, it never hurts to just test the waters, right?

I've really had to let go of my packrat mentality lately. Being broke sucks! I think that I'm going to part with one of my Elitists eventually and get another Jaguar - I'm loving this beast. I'd like to get a "beater" though - an MIJ w/ the TOM bridge and 'Buckers.

I'm trying to decide if I should talk to my local dealer about doing a consigment on one of my Elitists and then get a killer deal on a Jag through him as opposed to selling the guitar separately and not getting as much of a break on the new one... (I think that he'd be willing to only get "his cut" once if I did it that way)

Too many decisions. I'm going to think on that for a while...

Nice pickup there, Dice! I've always liked the tone of a Jaguar.

Not too keen on all the switches, but looks like a pretty versatile little beast.

Re: My New '65 Jaguar

Scooter - thanks for the videos - I'm sitting in class at the University now but will listen to them tonight!

DJ - I don't know. On the upper bout you have a pickup selector and a couple of tone roller knobs (I think!), lower bout has a kill switch and some tone knobs or something. I honestly haven't had much chance to play with it yet. It arrived, I plugged it in and it worked, took it to band practice, found some nice tone real quick and then rocked out. I need to learn what is going on w/ the switches tonight.

Re: My New '65 Jaguar

That's why I prefer a pup selector switch, and a couple of volume and tone knobs. Easy to figure out.

hahaha, keep us posted.

Life - thanks for the link - that really cleared things up for me!!!

I just took a quick shot of the Jag w/ my '69 Deluxe. I really love these "semi-old" wood guitars that cost less than new versions of the same guitar...
