i replaced the fender custom shop 54 pickups that i had put in there almosta year ago and was never happy with....heres the thing, i bought this deluxe super strat in 1998 and it had the push button feature that allows you to activate the bridge pickup to give you 2 more options over the 5 way switch. it was my first strat and first good electric(had been playing acoustics up to this point), and not being savvy on caps and volume and tone controls, i swapped out the bridge single for a SD lil'59 and changed the push button to a toggle switch so i could coil split. i run this setup for years and never used the single coils in the neck and middle position.
since then the lp bug bit me and i hadnt messed with the strat a whole lot. one day im in a music store playin a couple american strats through some amps and enjoying the single coil flavors so i decided to take the deluxe back to a normal strat. so i dropped the CS 54 pickups in there and never could get them to sound like i wanted. they were too trebly and brittle sounding. i thought they were wired wrong and rewired them aqgain to no avail. i tried everything i knew to do. messed with the pickup heights, caps, tone controls, nothing helped. i was ready to give up on the strat all together, when a conversation with Will @ WB convinced me to try his strat singles. i am glad i did!! the sound i was thinking i was supposed to be gettin was there!!! my frustration was over. it is a joy to play this strat again and im excited about my tone!! ill shut up now!

Re: New WB single coils

I've got a set of 6707 HotRods in my Warmoth strat...

I like them way better than what I had before (JB Jr. bridge & 2 Kinman 62's). I'm hitting the studio this Thursday with this guitar and the VHT rig. I can't wait to see how they'll record.

oooh yeah!!! now more than ever!! after putting the WB's in it really helped the tone of my strat. however to experiment i put the fender CS 54's in my other strat. damn if they didnt come to life. not so sharp and brittle as before. then i plugged my other strat back in and while it wasnt near as bad as before i could still hear a spikey trebly sound. comparing these two strats was driving me crazy and i was about to chalk it up to the guitar just being a bright guitar. so i was gonna throw humbuckers in it. but i kept looking at both strats trying to visually see any differences. the one thing that kept standing out was the nut. i had installed an lsr roller nut on the deluxe not long after i got it....the other strat had the standard plastic one. i decided to see if pehaps the lsr nut was contributing to the harshness, so i put a graphite nut on it. viola!!!!!!! the harshness was gone! now im in WB strat heaven!!! get em! they are sweet! im ashamed to admit ive been playing the strat more than anything else right now!
