American Special vs American Standard

Whats the difference?

Most notably I'm noticing the price tag.

I like the Texas Specials in the special, too.

Re: American Special vs American Standard

Just sold one of each, so I'll chime in. The standard, if I remember correctly, had the two-point bridge. The special has a 70's headstock. The texas specials on the special are a real bonus. That's pretty much all I could find.

I like the texas specials, and the big headstock is just big and annoying but I think I could get over it. Tough decision

Re: American Special vs American Standard

different bridge, the standard has microtilt neck and rolled
edges, special actualy has upgraded pickups, and 70's style neck, small differences.
Oh and you get a hard shell case with the standard, thats
what helps save you money.
I actualy just bought my standard at $100 off because i didnt
want a case, i already have an extra case for it.
i was going to get a Special, but got a great deal
on the standard, so i went for it.
Either one is a great guitar, just a mater of choise

Re: American Special vs American Standard

couple of more difference actually.

The Special has Jumbo Frets and the Standard has Medium Jumbos.

Special has the greasebucket circuit while the Standard has the Delta tone with the bridge wired to the second tone control.

Re: American Special vs American Standard

I asked the same question and got the same answers the other members have already posted.

The only thing that I was told thats not listed is that they have different finishes? I think I was told that the American Standard had a thinner finish than the American Special

Re: American Special vs American Standard

Special has a Satin finish on the neck. I reckon they're a bit of a bargain considering that (I like satin or oil finished necks) and the pickups.

This is not making it a hard decision for me at all.

Saving a few hundred bucks and getting a quality guitar.

Re: American Special vs American Standard

The special I had had rolled fretboard edges, too. I also liked the greasebucket tone-circuit. It reminded me a lot of my PIOs in my Les Pauls, and my other strats. I'd go for the the special, when compared to a standard. But then again, for $900 tax incl that they cost in canada, I'd build a strat with a warmoth neck and a set of Klein pickups (thats actually just what I did...)

Comparing the two, take the Special.

Re: American Special vs American Standard

I prefer the Special's myself. I like hotter pickups as I like to play overdriven rock n' roll and less of the clean glassy stuff. I love the Texas Special pickups. I have an American Special Tele and the only mods I've made is to put a humbucker in the neck position (a BurstBucker Pro I had lying around until I can afford a Duncan '59), but I still have the Texas Special in the bridge which I love.

Re: American Special vs American Standard

I just played a Special Strat today and it was one of the best strats I have ever played. The Texas Specials sound sweet. Great cleans and does well with distortion. When I get the money I am going to pick one up.

Re: American Special vs American Standard

I didn't like the bigger frets on the Special or I would have bought one. I got a standard instead.

Re: American Special vs American Standard

I tried as many different strats as I could then bought the standard. It was head and shoulders above the other ones I tried. No idea if I tried the special, though.

Re: American Special vs American Standard

I had a MIM and loved it, dont appreciate the giant ass headstock on the special, but i love the pickups 100x more than the one's in the MIM.

Anyways, epi custom sold today for $100 more than I thought it would, so I guess I have to decide sooner than i thought
