Cool books: 'The Complete Guide'

A friend of mine mailed me a package a week or so ago containing three books that I'm finding fascinating. They're called 'A Complete Guide' to the music of various artists. The three I got were:

The Clash
The Who (http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/059060/details.html)

Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys (http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/059062/details.html)

And from the search results I got (http://www.bing.com/search?q=the+complete+guide+to+their+music&form=OSDSRC), it looks like there are a number of these books, for everyone from Led Zep to Radiohead.

The books list all albums and give a bit of history as to where each band was in their development at the time, where they recorded, and a review of each track.

I read the one for The Who, and I'm currently reading the one on The Clash.

Very cool books for those interested in some often surprising narrative behind familiar records. I'm always interested in the details behind recordings, and these books give it to you in spades.

Floods devastate UK Lake District, much of Ireland

I hope nobody we know is effected by this, but really, what's up with the name of the town???:shock::shock::laugh2:

*COCKERMOUTH, England* – Raging floods engulfed northern England's picturesque Lake District on Friday following the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in Britain, killing a police officer and trapping dozens in their swamped homes.

Military helicopters winched dozens of people to safety and emergency workers in bright orange inflatable boats rescued scores more after an unprecedented deluge.

British soldiers conducted house-to-house searches for those trapped by floods as deep as 8 feet (2.5 meters). Troops also dropped down on lines from Royal Air Force helicopters, breaking through rooftops to pluck people to safety.

Constable Bill Barker, 44, died as he joined rescue attempts, swept into the surging waters when a major bridge collapsed. Emergency services said more than 200 people were rescued in the hardest-hit town, Cockermouth and about 1,000 homes were flooded.

In a message to local officials, Queen Elizabeth II said she was "deeply concerned and saddened by the dreadful flooding across Britain." British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Barker "was a very heroic, very brave man."

Britain's Met Office said a record 12.3 inches (314.4 millimeter) of rain fell in 24 hours in the area — the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the U.K.

Cockermouth, a market town 330 miles (530 kilometers) northwest of London, lies at the junction of the Cocker and Derwent rivers and is known as the birthplace of poet William Wordsworth. The flood was "of biblical proportions," local House of Commons lawmaker Tony Cunningham said.

Heavy rain and gales also brought widespread flooding to Ireland, as more than 3 feet (1 meter) of water shut down the center of the country's second-largest city, Cork, and more than a dozen towns and villages. The Irish army was used to rescue the stranded from waist-deep floodwaters and a helicopter winched to safety a County Galway family of five, including the 87-year-old grandmother.

Floods caused transport chaos along Ireland's western coast. At the Lake Hotel, on the shores of the fabled Killarney Lakes in County Kerry, about 170 guests at the Victorian period building were evacuated by tractor, as staff carried period furniture upstairs.

Irish weather forecasting service Met Eireann said parts of southern and western Ireland suffered their most intense and sustained rainfall in 30 years.

Burger King Limits Ketchup Consumption

WASHINGTON—In an effort to cut condiment expenses and address the gluttony, waste, and utter lack of self-restraint exhibited by Americans, officials from the fast food industry announced Monday a new policy prohibiting all customers from dispensing their own ketchup.
"We thought our patrons were responsible enough to handle a self-service ketchup pump," said McDonald's CEO James A. Skinner, who claimed that fast food industry leaders were partially to blame for overestimating the maturity of the American public. "However, after watching the way you disgusting people behave when entrusted with a little independence, it's clear that we made a terrible mistake."
"Unlimited access to ketchup is a privilege," Skinner continued, "not a right."
According to representatives from the nation's six largest fast food chains, Americans use more than $18 million worth of ketchup per year, with nearly $7 million of the tomato-based condiment ending up smeared on the backs of chairs, on nearby tables, or in the hair of small children, and in some cases simply spilt in large, repulsive puddles on the floor.
In all, some 220 factors were cited by the American Fast Food Association in their decision to remove the self-service pumps. Among them, the spectacular failure on the part of all patrons to recognize their own limits, and the tendency, among many men and women, to just squirt out the free condiment as if their lives depended on it.
"We tried to treat our customers like adults, and they took advantage of our generosity," said Burger King CEO John W. Chidsey, who was visibly upset after hearing that Americans use on average 14 ounces of ketchup per fast food meal. "What's wrong with you people? Were you scared it was going to run out or something?"
"Look, it's not even about the ketchup, okay?" Swette added. "It's about setting some boundaries for once."
Beginning Nov. 12, all participating fast food restaurants will begin serving a maximum of two ketchup packets with any hamburger-based meal. If a patron desires additional ketchup, he or she will have to fill out a special three-page Ketchup Request Form, which must then be presented to a manager on duty for evaluation.
In addition to specifying the reason for their request, customers will have to present fast food officials with two forms of valid ID, their social security number, and a signature from a third-party witness who can attest to there being enough remaining ketchup-free food to necessitate an additional packet. Only when all conditions are met will a patron receive a condiment voucher.
Patrons requesting barbecue sauce to dip their fries in will be escorted from the premises immediately.
"Our scientists don't spend countless hours manufacturing the food we serve just to have it dunked and drowned in obscene amounts of ketchup," said J. David Karam, president of Wendy's International. "Can customers even taste the dipropyl ketone or amyl acetate in our food anymore? It makes me sick."
Reaction to the new condiment policy has been overwhelmingly negative thus far, with some patrons claiming they would sooner eat lunch at home than frequent a fast food establishment that imposes limits on their ketchup consumption.
"This is outrageous," said Tennessee resident Sheila Hodge, a longtime fast food consumer. "If I want to gorge myself on so much ketchup that I need to vomit, then that should be my God-given right. This is McDonald's we're talking about. Half the reason I come here in the first place is so I can behave like a total animal."
At press time, the Arby's chain was continuing to let customers freely operate their "horsey sauce" dispenser, as nobody in America has touched that shit in years.

Video AVI Capture Help Please???

*I have an older Sharp video camera (VL-AH151) that uses the high 8 tapes and I want to capture the video off of them and burn to DVD or upload to youtube. I bought a cheap video capture USB device on ebay for $10 and thought I would give it a try.

Ulead Video studio is what it is called and the USB device that camera plugs into is a Syntech. I installed the software one my main computer and all it does is freeze after a few minutes. I finally was able to capture some video with it. Since it wasn't working right I tried installing it on my smaller AMD machine and the software works perfect (nice editing features) but I cannot get any video signal and audio is distorted???

I am fairly knowledgeable about computers, but no nothing about video software or capture. After spending 4 hours last night (up til 1:30am) and 2 hours this morning trying to get this to work I am out of ideas.

Many of you here at MLPF seem to be very computer savy, any thoughts, help or suggestions you could offer would be very appreciated. I have windows XP on both computers and have even tried Windows movie maker but can't get it working properly.

Thanks, jonesy*

I've been recording a song and I've been trying different guitars. So of course being the douchebag I am thought to myself lets see if people can really pick out what brand of guitars is being played (like the 10,000 other threads on this subjects). There a few things you have to remember.. It's my playing and it's not the greatest... it's just under fair. Also I would like to know of the 5 which sounds better so I can use that guitar for the finally recording.

Yes I know I suck (so you don't have to post it).. and no there weren't any cats harmed in making these.

The 5 guitars that I used are all Les Paul or Les Paul style guitars - Can you tell which one is which?

Here is what I used.
Agile AL3000, Bulldog Kit, 08 Epi Custom, 05 Epi Standard, 09 Gibson Faded

Guitar 1 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune (http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8373726)

Guitar 2 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune (http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8373727)

Guitar 3 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune (http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8373728)

Guitar 4 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune (http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8373730)

Guitar 5 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune (http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8373962)

Here is what I hope to achieve - I wrote the music and this is being played through Guitar Pro.
SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune (http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8373926)

Again I understand that I suck at playing.. so no need to point out the obvious.

Agile AL3000, Bulldog Kit, 08 Epi Custom, 05 Epi Standard, 09 Gibson Faded

Guitar 1 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune

Guitar 2 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune

Guitar 3 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune

Guitar 4 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune

Guitar 5 - SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune

Here is what I hope to achieve - I wrote the music and this is being played through Guitar Pro.
SoundClick artist: Sinster - Just me trying to hold a tune

Again I understand that I suck at playing.. so no need to point out the obvious.

Hadley CRU hacked with release of hundreds of docs and emails (http://www.examiner.com/x-28973-Essex-County-Conservative-Examiner~y2009m11d19-Hadley-CRU-hacked-with-release-of-hundreds-of-docs-and-emails)

The University of East Anglia's Hadley Climatic Research Centre appears to have suffered a security breach earlier today, when an unknown hacker apparently downloaded 1079 e-mails and 72 documents of various types and published them to an anonymous FTP server. These files appear to contain highly sensitive information that, if genuine, could prove extremely embarrassing to the authors of the e-mails involved. Those authors include some of the most celebrated names among proponents of the theory of anthropogenic global warming (AGW).

The FTP link first appeared on a blog called The Air Vent. The blog's owner, identified as "Jeff Id", downloaded the file, examined it, and posted a brief summary on his blog. Another commenter, identified as "Steven Mosher," passed the information on to Steven McIntyre's Climate Audit blog and to another blog, The Blackboard, run by a blogger identified as "Lucia." Most recently, blogger Anthony Watts, who runs a blog titled "Watts Up With That?" mentioned the FTP archive in his own blog.

Commentary on all the blogs involved has been brisk, except, oddly enough, at The Air Vent, where only seven comments have been received.

The FTP server is in a Russian domain and uses the anonymous FTP protocol, which does not require a pre-registered user account or password for downloading. The file is named FOI2009.zip, an apparent reference to US Public Law 89-554, 80 Stat. 383, the Freedom of Information Act.

Several commentators have expressed skepticism as to the authenticity of the archive, pointing to its lack of clear provenance and suggesting that someone was attempting to embarrass, either directly or indirectly, the dignitaries attending the upcoming climate-change conference in Copenhagen. Other commentators who have examined the e-mails in the archive conclude that the header and other information that they contain is too detailed to be a hoax. Thus far, no commentator has found anything in the e-mail headers that appears to be mistaken.

Some of the most embarrassing e-mails are attributed to Philip Jones, the Director of the CRU; Keith Briffa, his assistant; Michael E. Mann of the University of Virginia; Malcolm Hughes at the University of Arizona; and others. One such e-mail makes references to the famous "hockey-stick" graph published by Mann in the journal Nature:

I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline. Mike's series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.

The emphasis in the above quote was added.

Mr. Mosher offered this summary of the rest of the e-mails that he had found:

And, you get to see somebody with the name of phil jones say that he would rather destroy the CRU data than release it to McIntyre. And lots lots more. including how to obstruct or evade FOIA requests. and guess who funded the collection of cores at Yamal.. and transferred money into a personal account in Russia[.] And you get to see what they really say behind the curtain.. you get to see how they “shape” the news, how they struggled between telling the truth and making policy makers happy. [Y]ou get to see what they say about Idso and pat micheals, you get to read how they want to take us out into a dark alley, it’s stunning all very stunning. You get to watch somebody named phil jones say that John daly’s death is good news.. or words to that effect. I don’t know that its real.. But the CRU code looks real

John Daly (not to be confused with the professional golfer of the same name) is identified in one of the e-mails as a global-warming skeptic who died in January of 2004.

*As embarrassing as the e-mails are, some of the documents are more embarrassing. They include a five-page PDF document titled The Rules of the Game, that appears to be a primer for propagating the AGW message to the average subject/resident of the United Kingdom. The document suggests that it is a precis of a longer document housed at the Web site of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.*
