Had to sell my guitars needed the cash. Getting this on a loan from a friend. Option to buy. Small payments over time. Its a 74. Someone gutted it down to just the wood. Now has Duncan 59 in the neck and JB in the bridge. Gotoh tail piece,New Gibon nickle abr-1 and tuners, etc. May someday I will try to restore it back to original.

..........I'm going to have a serious discussion about Speedknobs.:thumb:

See, I was clearing out a few things the other day under strict instructions from Matron and I found and old suitcase full of sheet music from way back. So I was leafing through, taking a trip down memory lane as it were and there, stapled to the Kinks "I really got you" was a little bag and inside were a full set of Witch hat knobs. Where they originally came from I just don't know, anyhows I've stck 'em on me 3 pup Black beauty. What do you think?

Speeds or Witches?

I just noticed the input jack on my '79 Custom is way off center. I mean, it's not centered on the body, it's mounted so one edge is overlapping the binding on the back. Is this how they all are, or just sloppy construction on this one?

Man, between this, the overspray on my binding and no paint on one edge of my headstock, I can see why people thought Norlin-era guitars were poorly made.

But, it sounds and plays wonderfully! :)

Hello,

I just scored my first vintage-ish LP, a 1978 Special. The serial number says 07xx8xxx, so that's why I think 1978. I haven't found much more info, though. The pickups are from a 79 Deluxe (mini-humbuckers), and it has a clear acrylic pickguard. It's wine red with a flat body.

The only info I've found was a Gibson catalog from 1978, and this guitar is not in the catalog. The have a 55/78, which is similar except it has speed knobs and black pickguard.

Does anyone have any more info re: the 1978 LP Special?

BTW, I really love this guitar! THe neck is flat and fast, it has a great radius and killer action, and the tone is amazing! I dig P-90s but I'm not missing them here, I really like the minis. It's also heavy for not having a maple cap.

New Les Paul book is out. I am disappointed in what he has to say about the early 70s Standards. He takes the common and official version of the story, that until 1976 ALL Standards were rerouted Deluxes. And there was only one real Standard shipped in 1975. Well, true until 1974, this is right, but the Standard became a separate model, was was availible for Gibson dealers in 1974!! It was not a Standard/Deluxe or a Deluxe/Standard, in 1974 you could walk into a Gibson dealership and buy a Standard off the wall. It had a TRC unique to 1974, and was a full flegged Standard.

I bought one new, and I have seen many on Ebay. I even saw two at a GC in Tucson. The day I bought mine, I went to 3 separate music stores in the Twin Cities area and handled a few dozen before buying mine.

1974 LP Custom Refret? Some Help Please!

Hi,

I am finally beginning to accept that my LP Custom needs a re-fret, I am sad because the playability is great but I am struggling with bends due to the wear.

I was wondering what would be the closest fretwire I can get to what would have been used in the first instance. I understand that there are many sites out there that offer fret wire but would like to know from experince of MLP members (who may have done this themselves), what is best to use....I would prefer to have wider fretwire if possible!

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Guitar weight problems - Norlin

Last night's rehearsal was a doozie. All songs are polished, and ready for the coming gig. I played a lighter guitar and switched to my heavy 72 Deluxe part way through rehearsal. You know how it is when things are going right - we played fairly late.

Part way through the night, I noticed a twinge in my left shoulder, near where the strap goes (I am a right-hander). I thought nothing of it.

This morning, my shoulder is positively sore - much more so than it is usually from playing guitar.

My question (and observations) are:

- do any of you experience problems (particularly shoulder problems) with heavy LPs?

- what (if anything) do you do about it? Edit: are basswood telecasters, and lighter Epi SGs in my immediate future?

I am posting here because my LPs are mostly early 70s, and because I don't know where else to put it!

I am brought to thinking of George Harrison, who complained of 'heavy guitar-itis' later in his life. He switched to lighter guitars, after playing the kinds of things you see in my avatar for a lot of years, including the famous rosewood Tele. Is anyone aware of steps which will prevent further problems?

I was planning to get rid of my weight relieved 77 Gneco, which I describe in another thread. I am now rethinking that.

What Did They Make in 1985?

Hi guys,

longtime lurker, first-time poster. I've got a chance to trade a guitar I got recently (old Charvel superstrat) for a 1985 Gibson Les Paul Special. Judging from the pics I've been given, though, it's a rough customer. I'm hoping you guys can help me identify it. The serial, btw, checks out as an '85, which is why I'm treating it as such.

It's got a 'The Paul' trussrod cover, which the seller is claiming makes it a 'The Paul,' even though I know they quit making that one in '82 or round there.

Other than that, it's setup just like a normal Junior or Special, with a flat-top body, 3-way switch mounted like an SG, and vol/vol/tone/tone. I'm thinking it's been modified fairly heavily--it's got a Seymour Duncan in the bridge, and mini-switches mounted between the volume and tone knobs.

I guess what I'm looking for is, did they make a guitar like a Junior or Special with humbuckers in 1985? Obviously they made more popular models like the Standard and Custom, but what about the lower-end Pauls? What guitar could this be?!

Norlin Inconsistencies

I've got 2 Norlin Deluxes and I don't know if anyone else has the same thing, but both are pretty different guitars. I don't know when Gibson started using CNC machines, but I could imagine things like that came into use during the 70s.

Anyways, here's the stuff on my 2 that I've noticed. I'd like to see others as well!

Image: http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/60/l_d85d8dcb83b14a6bb0a2c9a91246ad04.jpg

Image: http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/20/l_30e5e2b7b608446590395154df5e7030.jpg

Other than general aging I see a few things different between the 2 guitars, the first is my 73' Gold Top and the second my 74' CSB. The 73's headstock has more flare and is larger, the 'Les Paul' signature is closer to the top of the headstock, and the truss rod cover is thinner (I couldn't get a comparison picture)

Image: http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/65/l_1b18a1bd70204bf8be75c082cb050a64.jpg

This is one that really got me, my 74' has a tiny volute. I used to wonder why people complained about it, then I got my 73' and realized how big it could be. The 73's is much larger compared to the 74's.

I love both of these guitars, the Gold Top is my favorite though; it sounds, and plays better, plus it weighs less than my strats.

Anyone else noticed differences in there Norlin era Gibson's? I know differences are going to exist at any time, but stuff like the volute and headstock I don't think would happen today, not with 1 year difference and no major model changes.
