I'm SICK of only knowing 4 scales. I need something to help me grow.

For the past three or so years, I have only known 4 scales.

Am - Penatonic

Phrygian

Aeolian

And some odd shape.

Also, a good sweeping lesson wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks guys... This is really bugging me... :(

I pretty much just started out & mainly been learning some chords & a few song intros. My problem is I find my fingers muting strings sometimes. Is this normal & can I expect to get better or did I choose the wrong guitar in a les paul.

Let me just start off by saying that i love guitars, and i love everything about them (not to mention i like tube amps too =) ), but in any case i have been playing for about 6 years or so now i started when i was 13 and did not take it very serious up until highschool. Now there is not a day that goes by that i do not pick up a guitar. I am not in a band or anything but i would really like to start jamming with people. My main problem is keeping time i've tried countless times to play with a metrognome and it just Clicks, and cant get into a groove. I can somewhat play along with songs, but not really. all i can really do is just bust out leads, licks, and chops. but i know that it takes a lot more than that to be a Musician. i went to my friends little brothers recital yesterday, and it was awesome nothing like watching 11 year old kids just rockin on stage! It kinda me thinking why i wasn't in a band, and i have come to the realization that i simply do not think i am good enough to play in with other people. i do not want to make a fool of myself. Does anyone have any thought or recomendations maybe ideas of how i can tighten my playing up so i will be an up too par musician?

My suggestion for playing and singing at the same time.

My suggestion for playing and singing at the same time.

I'm a teacher ( NOT a guitar teacher ) so I've devised a method or useful tips that should help you with this fairly complex proccess. Remember that you are trying to communicate using two different paths that intertwine with each other in kind of awkward yet beautiful way.

This is how I'd do it.

*1.-* Learn about rhythm. I'd suggest borrowing a basic drumming method from the libary or buying one. There are some fairly cheap ones that work great.
Learning about rhythm, accents, pauses and stamina is arguably the most important aspect of guitar playing. It'll affect your rhythm playing but also your solo work and how solid you sound. A player with a weak sense of timing and rhythm will *NOT* sound convincing ever in his/her playing life. Take it from me. I've been there for ages...

*2.-* Apply that knowledge to your rhythm playing; trying to play the simplest of tunes, enjoying and feeling every chord. Keep it as simple as possible and as mistake free as possible. Play for looooong periods, ideally with a metronome, listening to your rhythmic playing and be brutally honest with yourself. Is it groovy or is it dead?
Example of something *very simple* played *really badly*;

YouTube - Bill Murray and Eric Clapton - Crossroads
Awful isn't it? The vintage guitar, the good amp and the sympathetic crowd could not help a really foul performance. To be fair Bill is not a guitar player but still....

*3.-* Next step; Put your guitar down. Stand in front of mike. Get some vocal tuition material and practice some singing technique like breathing exercises & mouth position. Sing clearly. Try to sing as if you were trying to speak to somebody across the street. People want ot be able to tell what you are singing/saying. Do it carefully. Be aware of timing and try to be in tune. Relax and practice over a good length of time, in the sense of a good few months. With singing is more important little and often practice rather than long sessions.

*4.-* When comfortable carrying a tune with your voice pick your guitar again. Play rhythm as you practised before. Your guitar playing should be steady and characterful.
Start singing a simple melody over the guitar playing. At first it’ll feel weird as you have learnt both disciplines separately. Don’t give up. Keep it simple and slow and build up your speed and confidence.

*5.-* Listening to the greats might not be advisable at first though. If you listen to the few great players /singers you might be discouraged as being fully competent in both disciplines at once is hard.

*6.-* Be honest and DO NOT RUSH. Don’t give up and keep it simple and steady. When you can do it fine without mistakes allow yourself some freedom and emotion. Then let yourself go and don’t look back.

*7.- *If everything else fails take the BB King approach; sing while not playing and play when not singing.

Hi guys,

A few weeks ago I bought a Boss ME70. I thought it would be cool to have a looper so I could practise soloing over riffs or chord progressions of my choosing.

I made a video so I may aswell put it out there and would welcome any comments! :fingersx:

Hey, everyone!

I was wondering to myself at work the other day (because I'd rather think about guitars than making purchase orders), wouldn't it be awesome to play some of the songs from the old video games I loved?

When I had really thought about it, some of the old RPGs, like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 7, even Super Mario RPG, had some pretty cool songs in them and could definitely be experimented with.

Does anyone here have or know where to get some tabs on past video games?

Thanks in advance, guys.

A pickslide, or something else?

Boston is one of my favorite bands.:thumb:

And I think Tom Scholz is a great guitarist.

One thing I like about him is he does this pickslide or something and I don't know if it's got any effects behind it or if its all just technique.

The sound I'm referring to is....

YouTube - Boston-something about you
Listen from about 0:44-0:53 and you'll hear the slide at about 0:50.

Boston is one of my favorite bands.:thumb:

And I think Tom Scholz is a great guitarist.

One thing I like about him is he does this pickslide or something and I don't know if it's got any effects behind it or if its all just technique.

The sound I'm referring to is....

Jack Pearson.

When I lived in Gnashville he played pretty regular (from what I remember) at 3rd and Lindsey sometimes with Mike Henderson's "Bluebloods".

He's ALWAYS had frightening bebop chops from what I can recall. It was really cool stumbling upon this interview and videos.

His tale is pretty compelling.

Songs to play and complete Whole Lotta Love solo tab?

Well I have my Epi and I've started playing some Zeppelin. I'll list the songs I know that I can think of for now. I can't play full songs apart from those I do at church.

Communication Breakdown - Led Zep - If I could have a good sounding solo tab for this that would be awsome, I have the chorus and main riff done. I'm doing the riff as E then D A D it sounds good apart from the E.

Whole Lotta Love - Led Zep - Again a solo would be good I have the main riff done and sounding good.

Holiday - Green Day - I only learnt the solo, I was a huge Green Day fan in 05 and 06. I'm not interested in learning anymore of the song.

Califonication - Red Hot Chilli Peppers - I listened to RHCP allot when I was younger and only learnt the riff because I watched a band at school playing it.

Sweet Child o Mine - Guns n Roses - Again a big fan and only know the intro/repeat of entire song.

One - Metalica - I hate Metalica and learnt the intro by accident when playing random junk.

You Ain't The First - Guns n Roses - Learnt the main part to the song when I snapped the neck for the first time and was stuck playing acoustic.

Thunderstruck - AC/DC - Learnt it just to show off hehehehe.

Highway To Hell - AC/DC - Again found by accident while playing around.

Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream - First song I learnt and fell in love with, I know most of the song and taking the solo step by step.

Nighttrain - Guns n Roses - Probably one of my favourite GnR songs

Up Around The Bend - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Guitar Hero...

Midnight Special - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Heard my brother listening to it and started likeing it.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poisen - I had my guitar in Half Step down and started looking for songs to play in HSD and found this.

Seven Nation Army - White Stripes - A friend wanted to know it so I taught him it.

Final Countdown - Europe - Same friend.

So I don't know much and that's why I started this thread. I'm also looking for an accurate Rock n Roll - Led Zep tab. So please suggest some songs!

I'm trying to sing over this riff while playing it....I'm getting closer, but damn this is NOT easy at all!!!

YouTube - Bill Withers - Use me
Just sayin'.

Any advice?

EDIT: I could go this route with it...but my band is a 3 piece and I don't think the bass is enough to push this line out...
