Should I trade my US Strat Deluxe for this SG?

Hello!

I am thinking about trading my Strat for an SG. I was contacted by a seller with this one. I am concerned about counterfeit axes and also what value this Gibby has in US$ or Cdn$. Any opinions?

Hey guys....I just swapped for an '05 Explorer and the guy told me it was a '76 reissue. I'm wondering if it is, or actually just a run of the mill. Machines are Grovers, no cover humbuckers, one piece mahogany body, natural finish, and gold hardware. I thought the '76 reissues had Kluson style machines (6 on a strip) and chrome hardware.

Thanks...

Got a new ES-339!

Hello folks!

Two weeks ago I payed a visit to the States and on the plane home I had a really nice Gibson Custom Shop case laying on the overhead shelf.

When I got home, I could finally plug it into my Deluxe Reverb and it was screaming!

The action is pretty low, just as I like it and the intonation was spot on when I checked it and even though it had gone through one week in New York and after that a one week cruise in the Carribean and finally back home to Sweden, which is pretty amazing!

It also has really great sustain, just like a Les Paul.

These are available with a 59' rounded neck or a slim 60's one. I got the 60's since I've already got a 59' on myLes Paul and thought it would be nice with some variation. Anyways, the neck is very fast and easy and you can really feel the vibrations from the strings when you're playing.

The only thing that I didn't really like on this guitar are the knobs, which feel kind of cheap and plastic. But I've already ordered some really nice dark gold bell knobs, so it'll be fine.

I love it very much and the only bad thing is that I haven't touched my Les Paul in two weeks! :P

Some pics

Size compared to the Les Paul.

Unfortunately I didn't have my amp at home when recording this vid, so I'm playing straight through a small, crappy Custom bass-amp.

I have been kicking around the idea of changing the pickups in my SG Standard after only having it for a week. I really don't like the sound of the 490R. The 498T sounds pretty good. I have an Agile 3100 with Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz and they sound amazing compared to these pups. They have more clarity and the neck just sings with great earthy, woody, tone. Would these same pups sound similar in an SG.

I want great classic rock and dirty blues sound. Do you think 57 Classics would be an improvement? What pups do you recommend for an SG?

I have had my Standard SG for six days. Yesterday I was filing the nut and set it down into a stand. I walked away for a minute and when I came back my two year old son had tipped it over. Then nut hit a metal book shelf and it chunked off a very large piece of the nut. I guess I am lucky it didn't break the neck.

I contemplated renutting it myself but I am just not brave enough.

I decided to take it to Bruce, a Luthier at West Music in Iowa City. I thought about taking it to the Luthier Shop in Des Moines because they only charge $65 but it was too far of a drive. Bruce charges $125, ouch, but he does great work.

I didn't like the nut on it anyway. It had alot of angle on it and came to a sharp point so the strings rested on a very small surface area. I think the Corian seems soft and pinged a lot when tuning. Hopefully when I get it back with a bone nut it will be perfect!

I had been looking at these for a while at my local guitar center but the only one they had was an 09 that was pretty dinged up. It played decently and I really liked the neck, but I just didn't want to drop 700 bucks on that particular guitar. Well they were closing the store and moving it to a new location so I went to check out their grand opening and they had them on sale for 599. So I decided to pull the trigger on one they had brand new in the box.

It's an 08 in worn brown and I have to say I'm really impressed with this guitar. I've read numerous complaints about these and I guess I got lucky. Out of the box the fretwork is better than a lot of other Gibsons I've played and better than my LP Classics by far. Great crown and polish with no sharp ends anywhere. Of course it needed a setup but I've never bought any guitar that was set up just the way I liked it new. The action was high and the neck had a little bit more relief than i like but a few quick adjustments remedied that.

I was expecting to not like the pickups but I've found that I really do dig them after adjusting them. No complaints in that department. I will probably replace the pots and caps, but that should be an easy fix as this one did not come with a pcb. I've seen a lot of people complain about the pots being stiff and attributing that to the pcb, but these are pretty damn stiff even without it. I don't like them at all but like I said that's an easy and cheap fix.

I love the look and feel of the faded finish. I realize a lot of folks don't but thats why they make different things for different people I suppose. I love the neck on this guitar. It seems to be a bit more rounded than some of the 50's necks I've played before and is very comfortable to me.

All in all I think that this is one of the best values out there in this price range. It would have been nice to get a case with it, as the gig bag it comes with is really shitty, but for what I paid, I'm very satisfied. If you are in the market for an SG don't dismiss these guitars. The price/performance ratio on these things are hard to beat.
