dumb question

what exactly did RMC1 use in his dulling poly thread? what should you use if you don't have an electric sander and want the same result?

I believe it's a green scotch brite pad that you can do by hand, if I remember properly a member used one by hand with good results.

Re: dumb question

I used a green scrubby pad on my Epi's neck and it worked well. I would certainly not do this to a Gibson.

In any event, I maintain a sticky neck is a dirty neck, unless the nitro's gone soft - which it can if you use lighter fluid on it. Poly - gotta be dirt. Sanding'll take that crap right off, for sure.

i'd rather just get a satiny feel so i can play the shit out of it without having to clean it all the time.

I used a Black and Decker Mouse sander. Used one of the scratch pads that came with it on my Xaviere. I do like the feel of it and the satin look of it. Just ran up and down it like 4 or 5 times. Didn't put any polish on it either.

Re: dumb question

You will not dull the neck and as corny as this sounds, while your sitting around doing nothing take a paper grocery bag and cut it into squares and gently rub the neck of your guitar, it will over time smooth the feel .Gently being the key here.

You still need to clean it. Satin will build up dirt faster than gloss.

I like a satin look better myself. I've considered it very seriously for my Epi Junior. If I did it (which I won't, because that Junior is very special to me, just as it is) I would not, ironically, touch the neck.

Excellent advice. Much less expensive, and invasive, than the alternatives.

That brown paper is pretty magical, really.

Re: dumb question

Try ZYMOL car cleaner wax on your neck (heck the whole guitar). Seriously. No sanding necessary, satin like feel to the neck, perfect for slides. Other car wax does not have this effect and will not work. Had to do once on my standard and a couple of times on the special II but glad I tried that before getting too gutsy.

cool- how often do you do that?

I used anothers advice by using fine grit sand papa on my LP's neck and the difference is unreal. It's like playing another guitar. Thanks MLP!

How can you possibly ask him to do that? It would take effort on his part and that is not acceptable.

i read the whole thread before posting. i felt like RMC1 was being ambiguous about what he used instead of sandpaper, and i wanted to know what exactly to use before screwing up my #1 guitar. you guys are too quick to jump on the young ones, you know that? i was also wondering what is most recommended.

Re: dumb question

The guy who recommended Zymol cleaner is on the right track. I use another brand of the same sort of automotive stuff (Autoglym Radiant Wax Polish -- which contains no wax or abrasives but is only a cleaner and glaze). While this will not change the appearance of your neck, it will make it feel like satin and not sticky. If you buy a new guitar, you will notice that the poly finish is a bit sticky and makes it difficult to run your hand along the back of the neck, and throws off your playing. This is because poly finishes, when newly applied, leave a sticky oil on the surface. The Zymol or Autoglym product will permanently remove that sticky stuff. The only time you will have to re-apply is after you have played some sweaty, hot gig and you have dried perspiration on your neck and guitar. Then, a re-application will be in order. Or you coud merely clean it with Plexus, which is a spray on plastic cleaner available at most motorcycle stores.

These methods will give you the feel you want without screwing up your guitar.

Re: dumb question

You should apply your choice of Zymol or Autoglym chemical cleaner/glaze products first, and see how you like the feel. This will not dull the finish or make any permanent changes to your guitar, but will merely give your neck a satin feel (IMO). It is cheap and quick to do, with no chance of damage, so that is what to try first.

How was he being ambiguous about what he used? There are close up picks of the pads he used.
