Re: Aging..

This topic seems to come up every couple of days...

I think your best bet it to leave it out in the sun for a bit.

Tie it to the hood of your parents car for a month.

Re: Aging..

Somehow I am tired of all these people who want to age their guitar (Sorry Termanator7)! Buy a vintage guitar or whait twenty years and you will have your aged guitar!
You know! I am happy that my guitar looks that clean!

Re: Aging..

There's that thread of Eggy's... I'd mentioned it a couple times in other threads, but never went and found the link. You did a great job on that, bro.

Re: Aging..

I hope it can shed a little light on possible ways of giving Epi's that little extra Mojo.

Re: Aging..

Hey Eggy--thanks for the thread link. Very well written.

Your LP took to the treatment wonderfully, and from one R9/R7 owner I'd be proud to own that ride any day.

Aging the white to the yellow look may be tougher, as I'm not sure how fast a white poly coat will yellow. Eggy, every worked with that?

Re: Aging..

The white itself won't yellow, but the clearcoat will - as a result of UV exposure (errr... damage). The white backdrop makes the yellow really stand out. I don't think that there is an exact science to it, but sitting your axe in the window for a few weeks should bring on some change, I think.

Keep the fretboard oiled...

Better yet, just cover the fretboard so the sun doesn't hit it. I have read that the inlays can go dark with excessive sunlight. Haven't seen it myself, but better safe than sorry.

Cheers b-squared !

The truth is aging is way more of an art than it is an exact science. I would advice keying the finish first on white with a fine glass paper then applying Ronseal Antique pine stain. The stain is then removed with more glass paper and finally buffed just shy of gloss to give it it's aged feel.

It's very easy to say all of this in a thread but it takes real skill to be able to pull it off. I'd advise practicing on a bit of scrap wood painted white/cleared before touching your guitar.

I could advise which oil paints, brushes, canvas etc but it's difficult to explain how to paint the Mona Lisa.

Re: Aging..

Not a big deal - I ask about shit that has come up before too - worth using the search function and checking on things though, particularly when someone mentions that there have been threads about something in the past!
