If you have to ask, I'd say "don't".

I just bought an Epi Tribute Les Paul. Great bang for the buck, and it has the Gibson 57 and 57+ pickups. I'm extremely happy with mine.

Re: What Epiphone Les Paul Shold i get?

Best thing to do is just go to your local dealer and start playing every one in the store. You'll know it when you've found the LP you should buy.

If you can't purchase locally the make sure that when you buy online it's from an authorized dealer only. A Studio Plus or a Standard would be a nice step up for you. The PUP's are fair/decent and should wake up some if you replace the stock wiring and pots. If you're willing to step up to the higher price brackets I really can't recommend the Les Paul Tribute model enough. And if you get another dud you should send it back for a replacement.

Good luck!

For comparison... what makes your Special II really really bad, and what do you have to compare the sound to to know it's really really bad?

well the action is stupid high, for a unbearable fret buzz on the low E string and all so the bridge pick up is so god dam twangy (at least is seems that way to me compared to the neck one)

Re: What Epiphone Les Paul Shold i get?

High action = poor setup.

Fret buzz = poor setup.

Bridge pickups are always "twangy" compared to neck pickups.

Re: What Epiphone Les Paul Shold i get?

One big factor regarding your action are the nut slots. If your nut slots are not filed down to the appropriate depth, your guitar will never play well .

well re adjusted the nut but i manage to remove the buzz from A and D strings but the Low E is still there but not that much i can still feel it in some songs. and all so if i didn't rise the bridge i wold have all my frets buzzing hence the high action all so added hybrid string on it still removed a bit of the buzz but still didn't remove it

Seriously dude you need to have your guitar set up by a pro.
Not trying to offend you, just how it is.

Have it set up. Don't use the bridge pickup, or pick further up towards the fret board when you do.

God thinks your bridge pickup is fine. She told me so last night.

Re: What Epiphone Les Paul Shold i get?

Raddar:

Welcome aboard. I think that your guitar sounds like many Epis I've heard of (including mine) that needed a new nut and a fret level/polish by a pro luthier to play well. If you buy another Epi, chances are good (I'm afraid) that you will have the same problem with it.

After having my luthier change out the nut on my '56 LP Goldtop P90 to a correctly grooved bone nut, and having a fret level/polish job done, I am now playing with stings set at .8mm above the top of the 12th fret (a little higher than 1/32") without buzz. My luthier set the neck dead level before the fret job. I like the neck near dead level (little if any relief) so it plays great. My luthier charged me $91 for this, and it was damn sure worth it.

If your bridge pup sounds too harsh, lower it. That usually does the trick.

No. It's a 'stop-tail' equipped guitar. No 'bridge' as we are more familiar with.
