Re: Quilted Tops

Is there a difference between quilted maple and flame maple? I was under the impression that they are pretty much the same thing...

Well, they both fall under the "figured maple" category, but flame tops are mostly straight lines ... quilt tops are kind of wavy/puffy looking, got lack of better description. For example, my honeyburst +top - flame

as opposed to the quilt top look - definitely a difference...

Re: Quilted Tops

Yes, that is quite a difference, thank-you.

I guess I haven't seen very many quilted top guitars around then.

Re: Quilted Tops

I have an Epi "Classic" quilt-top which isn't really much different than a Standard except the open humbuckers. It's damn impossible to take a picture of it that shows the grain since it's transparent black, but maybe you've given me a goal for the afternoon!

Re: Quilted Tops

Okay, this is about the best I can do right now. Man, that's a tough shot to get! I tried it outside on a heavily overcast day with no luck. Inside without flash; nothing. Finally, perched at an odd angle, with the flash turned around backward with the diffuser in place, this is the least-reflected image I could manage. Looks more like an ostrich feather in person than a "quilt". Trans-black Epiphone LP Classic 2004:

Now riddle me this: Many shots here show the bridge with the intonation adjustment screws on the neck side, others show it on the stop side. Even the Gibson shot in this thread has them aiming "down". Which is "correct" or is there a reason for one versus the other?

MMMMMMmmmmmmmmm ........ that sure is purdy As far as riddling you that, I don't know - I've seen people post saying to "reverse" the bridge on the posts, but can't recall any particular reason. I've refrained from doing it, as one would have to totally redo the intonation, I'd assume ?

The reason some people do that is for intonation purposes and because for some it's easier to turn the screws from the stop side. I for one turn the individual string saddle around. On the low E string and sometimes the G string I will turn the saddle so that the flat side can butt up flat against the bridge to the stop side. Because on some of my guitars it's the only way to get those strings to intonate properly.

Not to get too far off the post topic, but it seems the three low-side strings always have the flat side of the saddle on the stop side, with the three high-side strings the reverse. Is it simply a matter of whatever works? I'm a novice, for sure, but set the intonation myself when I changed string type.

Yes when the screw is all the way down and you still cant get to the intonation you turn the saddle, but the whole bridge??

Thanks. I'm kind of fond of it myself! My wife gave it to me for Christmas . . . or, well, she caught me spending a lot of time looking at Les Pauls on Ebay just before Christmas and told me to go ahead and it'd be her present to me. Still working on it to make it mine, but nothing too bad to deal with. I gave it new strings, a good cleaning, repaired the wiring and insulated it to keep from rattling, and I'm thinking about retrofitting the open pickups it was built with. The original owner included them. These are some EMG-copy with not an identifying mark on them, top or bottom. Seller said they came from a pro shop in Canada but the "pro" must have been a house framer the way he installed them (the only mark on the finish). The bridge pickup has hardly any output. Neck works pretty well. Still working on it. Sounds great unplugged!

I always figured myself for an ebony Standard, but this one caught my eye. I'd been looking at the more recent trans-black quilted Classics but couldn't get past the all-black hardware. Just me. Nothing personal. Something captivating about the quilts. Like laying on your back and watching the clouds roll by. Kind of glad I didn't see these in the '60s or the pharmaceutical stupor would have had us staring into the grain all night long!

Thats funny!

I get gifts from my wife the same way - I find and buy it, but its "from her" - which really means "buy yourself something and I just won't get you anything" which works out nicely!
