Re: Zakk wylde pickups, or new guitar?
It depends bro. If u have only the special II I'd go for the Standard or Custom...
If u have more than 1 guitar already, hummm actually I'd buy another hehehe Give the Standard Alnico Humbuckers a try... and then, with a mahogany body, set neck, etc, u can give the next step changing the pups... This is my humble opinion... Or try a Les Paul Studio and get the pickups too!!! It depends on yer budget of course... but I have a Studio and know I have setted it correctly is a very good axe ($330 in guitar center...just incredible...I wish i lived in the US)... Play a lot of them.... I think you'll feel more difference changing the guitar...definitely... |

Upgrade the guitar my man! You'll love the set neck and carved top.
Its totally up to you - but those pickups are worth more than the guitar you're putting them in, right? |

Re: Zakk wylde pickups, or new guitar?
yeah lol, think ill just upgrade to this if i have the money....
Epiphone Limited Edition Les Paul Custom and more Solid Body Electric Guitars at GuitarCenter.com. or this Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top Electric Guitar and more Solid Body Electric Guitars at GuitarCenter.com. i can always get the pickups later after i work a summer job, so... probably the custom....i like the color better and i am betting the sound is much more crisp

Re: Zakk wylde pickups, or new guitar?
The pickups in the Standards are pretty sweet. They are the same I have in my G-400. So do what I did. I have a LP II and I was considering upgrading it, but just get a new guitar man. The LP II has joke tuners on it and shoddy wiring and pots. I use it for acoustics when I don't wanna run through my amp, or trying to keep the noise down. Something I am planning on doing though, is upgrading the tuners on my G-400, then putting the G-400 tuners on the LP II. Then if I get enough money for like a set of nicer pickups, then I will put my g-400 pickups in my LP II. Then you have a nice set of pickups, so if you upgrade to a Gibson, you can put the better pickups in there your Gibson, and put the Burstbuckers in the old guitar. Just a lot of switching around, but its worth it.
Edit: I was looking at the two guitars. I'm pretty sure the custom has the same pickups as the Standard, if not worse. GC advertises the custom as dual humbuckers, but goes into more detail, by classifying the Standard to have Dual Alnico's in it. Hell don't listen to me, jsut go to your local GC and test them out and ask a rep there, not they really know much.

Re: Zakk wylde pickups, or new guitar?
Ok, play the guitar unplugged for a while. Why? Because the epi pickups are mediocre. You want to hear how the guitar sounds unplugged because then you can make the best decision. How is the sustain, does it ring out, how are the frets, how does the neck feel, how does the finish look. Most likely you are going to swap out the pickups anyway at some point, so by playing it unplugged you can take them out of the equation.

I don't even plug in a guitar until I'm reasonably sure I'm going to buy it. The variation between electronic components in Epiphones are much smaller than the variation in woods and construction. |

Re: Zakk wylde pickups, or new guitar?
Ok, the pickups are 200. What you should do is take the 200 and put it towards a LP standard. I would not put 200 into a LP special 2. It's like putting Z rated tires on a pinto. It makes no sense.

Re: Zakk wylde pickups, or new guitar?
You will be much happier with a new guitar. The LP special 2 is not made as well as a Standard. You will have playablity AND tone with a Standard. Good luck, I know you will be happier!
