New guitar prices?

Is anyone tired of seeing all these new guitars, specifically Gibsons that are coming out with 5k+ price tags on them? Seriously, who can afford these things? I mean you can buy a decent car for what some of these new guitars cost. Sorry for the rant, just irriated lately.

Re: New guitar prices?

yeah but when no one buys then the tags go down. standard gibson sg's were like $1400 and now theyre around $1200. not a huge drop but but $200 is $200

That is just the MSRP. They go for about $2000 less.

Re: New guitar prices?

MSRP is outrageously inflated. Generallly, take 150 or 200 dollars off gc price (on gibsons) and about 100 on epis and thats what I find to be a good price around local stores. Just depends on where youre located.

++100! This has been a sore spot for me for quite awhile. It's not just inflation, it's greed more than anything. I mean seriously, they are charging more for some of their regular line guitars than Fender is charging for the Eric Clapton Strat or the Jeff Beck. I noticed that the David Gilmore Strat is pushing $5K. But a regular production guitar can still be had for much less than $2000.00. Maybe they are counting on Epiphone to fill in the "discount" market, I wish that Gibson would put out a affordable line with the quality and the price point somewhere in between Epiphone and their high priced production models. For now and the forseeable future there is no way in hell that I'll be able to get another Gibson. Just glad that I got my Les Paul Studio while they were reasonable, I just regret not putting up a few hundred more at the time and gotten a Standard. Then again the hardware, pick ups, wood are the same as the Standard just not the fancy finish and bindings. Oh, well. There are alot of things that I wish that I had done differently 20 years ago. Then maybe I wouldn't be such a broke ass whiny bitch now and I'd be able to afford a Gibson Les Paul Traditional, then and only then will I know peace and happiness.

Re: New guitar prices?

Its just udderly ridiculous. I work at GC, and you cant TOUCH a Gibson LP standard for less than 2800. even the used prices are still over inflated. I mean seriously, does the music industry not realize the nation is in a recession? Fender, Schecter and PRS get it, and have very nice instruments for around the 500 dollar mark. Hell some of Fender's Squier stuff rivals Epiphone gear. I just dont understand how an average working musician, can purchase new, quality gear, and not have to eat Ramen and drink water, just to enjoy his craft. Someone somewhere needs a reality check.

Re: New guitar prices?

Gibson is not targeting the "working musicain" They target the rich mom and dads and day traders that can afford to buy them. Epiphone is the guitar of choice for the "working musician" who wants a decent Les Paul that they can afford. Bottom line. Gibson doesnt give two flyin shits about people who cant afford their product. You think they count on sales from the guy who has to scrape and save for two years to buy one? No they could care less, and why should they when their gonna make millions for having guys like Slash play their gear? Its a business and they do just fine without us.

What does Bush have to do with anything? I believe that we are talking present tense. Thank Obama.

Youre plain stupid. Due to Bush's inadequate financial policies and his waste of US currency in useless wars, he artificially inflated the dollar, a very probable cause of the recession. There is no present tense because what obama has done so far is too short term to truly judge him.

Re: New guitar prices?

I didn't start this political B.S. You want a contributor to inflation? How about a multi-trillion dollar "stimulus package" that as far as I can tell, has done nothing except - ready - promote inflation.

Re: New guitar prices?

Stick around, this party is just getting started. Wait till the middle classes of China and India grow, while at the same time the US's shrinks. Those emerging (thanks to US wanting cheap labor to hide there own currancy debasements) middle class populations will be competing for the same sweet guitars. You have not seen anything yet. Wait 5-10 yrs from now. You ain't seen nothing yet.

Or people paying $325k for a 1959.
The Japanese started this in the 80s.

It's currently what the market will bear.
