Need help on purchasing my first guitar
Okay so i have been playing with my church band spare guitar (Fender squire). As you can tell i'm very interested in a les paul because it's tone and how well it does with distortion. My question is should i buy a Epiphone Les Paul studio or spend a little more for a standard?

Here is the info on the guitars. A good idea is also to try other brands such as Tokai, Agile or Vintage.

Re: Need help on purchasing my first guitar
Other than cosmetics, the Studio and Standard are exactly the same construction wise and tone wise. So unless you want a prettier guitar go for the Studio. Also it is SQUIER not SQUIRE... this irks me to no end. It clearly says SQUIER on the headstock. Sorry it's not just you but I see this everywhere and I just have to comment on it. It drives me nuts!

Re: Need help on purchasing my first guitar
The Standard has the carved maple top on a mahogany body, most Studio's have a solid carved mahogany body and top as 1 piece of wood, neither is a bad choice and the Epi's are decent guitars also, it basically boils down to haow much money do you want to spend ? You can PM me if you want to know more,Greg.

Re: Need help on purchasing my first guitar
i`ve had both guitars. the standard felt better playing wise, fuller tone
in essence the std were better in tone and playability. and it looks nicer as well

Re: Need help on purchasing my first guitar
the studio has a thinner body than the standard. not sure about what kind of top the standard has. could be alder . check out both guitars and see which one you like best. i would go for the standard, it also looks the best of the two

Re: Need help on purchasing my first guitar
Ok here is what I tell new players............
Once you have decided upon a style of guitar that you like, go play as many of them as you can. While doing that find some that are similar as well to check out. For example- while looking for Les Pauls check out the PRS SE Singlecut. Also the LP Studio is a great guitar, same as the Standard minus all the gingerbread. Look for fit and finish flaws, check out the frets for rough edges and uneveness, compare the sound to others and really pay attention to how it feels in your hands. You will absolutely know when you have the right one.

Re: Need help on purchasing my first guitar
Yeah i been going to guitar center to test them out but im most likely gonna be buying from an online source since it is the cheapest for a new one. Luckily with these two online company they have great customer service if the guitar is not to the buyer standards

I have the Epiphone Standard Plus and it plays really nice. I would not buy the studio. Much lighter than the standard. Here is a picture of of my standard (replaced the pickups with Dimarzio Super Distortions):GuitarJuly212008 004 - Copy.jpg

Re: Need help on purchasing my first guitar
okayy so i decided to get a Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Vintage Sunburst. Now my next question is what type of wires do i need and how important is it? I was looking at monster but that pretty expensive, is it worth the price?

Re: Need help on purchasing my first guitar
I just bought my 1st guitar too, epiphone les paul ultra. I researched everything from picks, straps, to cables. The cable I got was a dimarzio 18ft for about $35. I was looking at some monster cables myself but went with dimarzio it seemed like a good cable & had a better variety of lengths.
