Scratching the rosewood?

The rosewood on my LP looks a little more dirty than my other guitars, it looks like its stained white in places - dunno if thats normal sometimes.

Well got it new a week or so ago and I noticed the strings are putting pritty big scratches in the rosewood; this isn't really noticeable on my other guitars but it is on the LP. Will that harm the frets or anything; I trust it won't quickly wear down the wood?

I they'r dunlop strings and I'm planning on changing them to d'addaiyo (can't spell - u know what I mean) the ones Im using might b plain steel. (non coated)

Re: Scratching the rosewood?

I Kant Spill sometime Ithere, when you change strings you could steel wool (00000 grade)the board and put a lite coat of oil on the board. You know lemon oil ( sold for guitars) or double boiled Linseed or tung oil or bore oil, use sparingly let it soak in a few mins. buff it up with a clean rag. The white is IMO residue from the polishing compound used in finial finish polish that got on the board, should come off. Cleaning the board, will or should remove the scratches, they may come back.

Re: Scratching the rosewood?

Your strings shouldn't be touching your fretboard. I read somewhere in one of your posts (IIRC) that you tune down 1/2 step? You may move up a gauge in strings or use standard tuning - because, again, your strings shouldn't touch your fretboard!

I use lemon oil on my fretboards regularly, as well. The color variation is pretty, and normal!

(Edit - I misread your post. The white should go away w/ some lemon oil - the LP on the left had some white patches in the grain as well, and some lemon oil and a cloth brought it out.)

Re: Scratching the rosewood?

Hi there, I had an Epiphone Dot with that white stuff on the board. I agree I think it was polishing compound. It was stuck down in the grain of the rosewood and the only way I could get it out was with a toothbrush and lemon oil. Give it a try.

Re: Scratching the rosewood?

The strings arn't slack against the fretboard when not playing, I'd b overly stupid if I left it like that.

When I play, and press the strings down on the frets; the strings are leaving scratch markes on the rosewood.

Re: Scratching the rosewood?

Trust me - its not me that isn't making sense here! How the hell are your strings scratching the fretboard if the strings don't touch the fretboard?

The string should NEVER touch the fretboard AT ALL. Not when fretting, not when slack, not ever.

Re: Scratching the rosewood?

I look stupid all the time no worries. Were you strings touching your board, or is it something else?
