496r/500t pickups. Will they fit?
I've got a great opportunity to get a set of the Gibson 496r/500t humbuckers from my buddy's 1960 Les Paul reissue for $100 cash. Will they fit in an Epi? They have the Gibson mounting rings with them. All original.

Re: 496r/500t pickups. Will they fit?
Drilling new holes won't be hard. And hell, the pickups themselves might actually fit in the stock pickup rings. Who knows. I just didn't want to buy the pickups and then have them not fit.
Any opinions on the pickups I may buy? |

Re: 496r/500t pickups. Will they fit?
The pups will fit, however the screws, you'll need to use the ones that come with the Gibson pups. The Epi pup screws are too big to fit the Gibs pup.
And regarding pup recommendation, I just changed mine to Dimarzios Air Norton (neck) and Air Zone (bridge) and have been loving them so far. Very articulate even when pushed with distortion... If you go over to the tonefreak section on this forum, I'm sure you'll get more pup recommendations and hopefully they can help better in giving you more pup ideas. |

They'll fit, the Gibson rings will probably leave a small gap around one side of the pup ring. This can be remedied by simply using the Epi rings.

they will fit, I have installed them in one of my Epis, although I did reuse the Epi rings as I didn't feel like filling and redrilling the screw holes on this one.

Re: 496r/500t pickups. Will they fit?
I hate to bump an old thread, but I got another question. I hate the look of open-coil humbuckers, so I would want to put chrome covers on them. Anyways, does anyone know which one of these chrome ones would fit on these pickups?

Re: 496r/500t pickups. Will they fit?
i just got the same set of pickups as you, free from my man dennis(thanks).
1.) the pickups WILL fit into the stock epi rings, which is the way to go, however you will need the gibson mounting screw and springs, becasue the epi ones are too short. no drilling needed. 2.) the allparts chrome rings will fit, but make sure you get the set with the different pole piece spacing. i made the mistake of getting the one with both of them that are the same, so i have one on the neck, because the spacing is too small for the bridge. You will need to solder the rings onto the brackets on the bottom of the humbuckers, very easy. You can use the parrafin method or electrical tape. I went with parrafin wax. these covers will fit with yours ALLPARTS guitar parts, bass parts, guitar amplifier parts and you will have to do some extra wiring, because the stock epi pickups have 5 wires comng from them. The gibson ones are single conductor so there is one wire. the one wire is the hot wire, and the metal sleeve is used for grounding the pickup

Thank you leftylover! The pickups have the Gibson mounting springs and screws. How exactly did you do the paraffin wax thing?

I'm not really sure about that....verify the pole spacing beforehand.

The pickups should fit in the stock rings. My 490s did.

Quote:
also, make sure you take the black ribbon stuff off of the pickup, otherwise the edges of the cover will bulge out and it will be a tight fit in the pickup ring.

Re: 496r/500t pickups. Will they fit?
Just sink them into the Epiphone Pickup ring and your answer will be obvious.
(PS. I used mine)
