A question about nuts

I bought a Black Tusq XL from Graphtech and got it yesterday. It's made for Epis, and even though I have not installed it yet, the size and string spacing seems to be dead on (although some sanding is necessary). My question is about the grooves... they seem to be a little bit big. I use .09 strings and I'm thinking that the grooves are too big for this string gauge. I haven't read anywhere what size strings this nuts are made for, but I'm guessing the XL is an indication that it may use thicker strings? Or am I completely mistaken here?

Then I saw this pic:

Check out the first string... the groove is bigger than the string. Is this normal? Shouldn't the string have a tighter fit on the groove? Or am I completely mistaken here?

Re: A question about nuts

It's not the biggest deal ever, it might effect it a little bit. Even if you go up to a really high gauge, you won't be able to fill it anyways.

Re: A question about nuts

Thanks, Sin. As long as it sounds better than the stock nut and there's less or no buzzing, I'm cool with it.

Re: A question about nuts

The neat thing about graphite is the sting seems to have less problem with less than perfect slots.
Same with the Tusqs.
So if it aint broke don't fix it!

Re: A question about nuts

It'll work fine. It happens on most pre slotted tusq nuts.

Re: A question about nuts

All men should feel this free to ask questions when they aren't sure about their nuts

I don't know if i could have my nutz carved, epecially since they're made of brass.

But really, thats much better than some guitars that i have purchased with damned 11's that look like they were trying to squeeze in slots for 9's
