my first electric
I found a pretty good deal on a epiphone goth last week. I was just wanting a little feedback on these. I had to set the action and intonation, and it needs a new nut still, but I am really happy with how it sounds. I am wanting to switch up a few things. I made a cherry pickguard today, but it doesnt really match the neck, so I am going to do one out of Ipe(sp) cuz I have some laying around. I think that I want a chrome pup cover on the bridge, maybe tuners and knobs as well. Any info on these is appreciated.

Re: my first electric
Congrats on getting your guitar bro, and welcome to MLPF.
Nice job on the PG but not sure how it looks with the BlacK? Those Humbuckers may sound better so putting a cover on the bridge pu may look cool but may not help your Tone? A lot of times you see cover on neck and none on bridge (JImmy Page) because you want your bridge to be a little hotter and more wide open for rock etc. peace, jonesy |

Re: my first electric
some people do like the bridge tamed abit though so you may like the cover on option? although I do prefer cover off the bridge pup and covered neck (I find can get more tonal variation between pups that way). Depends what you want to acheive tone wise. Nice pickgaurd, looks like a really neat job.

Re: my first electric
Thanks for all the input. I will leave the cover off for now. Really just wanting to break up the black on black on black. Although it really doesnt look that bad. I just want it to look like MY guitar instead of a series. Anybody have info on cheaper tools and parts than Stew/Mac? Jonesy maybe? Also, I need to make a new nut, and files are $38 a piece. Has anyone used the Tusq that are pre beveled? I havnt seen these before the other day, can it possibly work? I also have to level out a few frets, so need tools for that as well.
The pickguard is a little light, so I am either going to stain it to match the fretboard, or I have some really pretty Ipe which has a really beautifyl color. Thanks for the warm welcome. I love this site already! |

Re: my first electric
Welcome hamp! Congrats on the Goth. I am currently wanting one of those to try my first mod with. I have heard good reviews of them. They seem to be the perfect platform to build on. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Lots of pics please!

Re: my first electric
This is my opnion and mine only, but I think a black guitar with black pups needs cream pup rings, that would break it up nice.

Welcome! Have fun with your project - I've got a Goth as well, cool guitars. Jonesy will hook you up with anything you need in the tone department.

Re: my first electric
i've used the tusq nuts. they work pretty good. you dont need files with them either, just sandpaper. if you have a black nut on there already, i think its already an upgraded nut, its graphite or something, i dont know for sure, but its pretty hard.

Re: my first electric
Wow, That guard has my attention. That's pretty amazing since you made it.
(I like wood work.) nice color too. It makes me wonder if I could make one... ![]() Besides that. Beautiful Guitar! I'm not sure about how it would look with just one 'pup cover though..? Oh well. Welcome to the forums. It is a great place!

Re: my first electric
gwank, did you install it yourself? if so was it hard to level the bottom to get the right height across the neck?
Also, my epi is korean. Any info on the korean models? I was thinking some antique white accents might look sick. Maybe a bone nut and pickguard to match. Might need tuner knobs as well. Originally I was thinking wood pickguard, tuner knobs, and chrome bridge PU cover. I will post pics of the transformations when I decide on them. Oh, and chrome tone/volume knobs. |

Re: my first electric
Thanks Gsquirrell, it was easy. I just planed down some cherry to 3/16+ and tr4aced out the other PG. sanded it dow. I am staining it now, trying to get a little darker, then I will put a satin finish on it.
