New member wants help

Hello fellow les paulians,

I am BRAND new to the Les Paul world. I just bought my FIRST Les Paul guit. Although it is an Epi. Like some of you I could not afford the Gibson. I am looking forward to this site and getting as much information and tools as I can to make me a better player. I've only been playing for around a year now. I still have a long way to go ( I think). Any one out there who can give me pointers feel free. Oh yeah, I'm a lefty. It did take a few days to get the hang of reading tabs.

It is a Standard. I'll post pics as soon as I can. Right now I'm not putting this thing down until I get tired. I bought it at Guitar Center here in Fort Collins, Co. It was the only lefty they had, besides the fender strats.

Re: New member wants help

techniques !!!!!!!! wow kind of a hands on some one should be here to help you out till you find what works best for ya! Get some video disc. wish they had them out when I started out. Learn as much theroy as you can, scales, chord structure, basic song structuers of what ever type of stuff you are into. Getting any kind of instruction , books, other players? An amp do you have one now ? What is the best amp well IMO that you will find out after you get into playing more. Take lots of time just fooling around with the guitar once you have a grasp on playing a bit , allow your self some time each day to make up your own thing even if it does not fit into rules and techniques thrown at ya. Play with what you feel not what you know. That being said you have to know something to allow this to happen.

Do not waste your money on changing the pickups or anything on the guitar for now ,unless it breaks which should not happen the newer epi are built well mostly LOL I have a 2004 which works great even the Pick ups sound fine. Am amp for beginers which IMO would be good is the Vox AD30 has some pedal effects built in as well and sounds,( built in different amp types) similar to other amps , yes similar not the same. It will give you a idea on which amp you may want to go for in the future.
so many great amps out there its a tough choice and seeing how most good tubes or any good amp is so costly , its hard to suggest which would be the best lots of players have several different ones for different uses.IMO once you can afford one a good tube amp is the thing to get. Which one will be up to you. In the mean time hang out with other players if you can go out and watch other players, listen to their gear setups, have fun.

Hey, I was just looking for some advise. I already have a scales poster, a chords poster, a poster for warm ups, a Hal Leonard book w/3cds, a picture book of over 1,000 chords for guitar players. I also use the guitar tricks.com web site for lessons. But, I still have some trouble getting progress in speed. I use a fender frontman amp.

Your right, I do try and practice quite a bit after work. But, as far as speed goes I guess that I've haven't really tried (maybe just a little). But my fingers don't move as fast as my brain. So I go slower and try to speed up a little. I just try too hard maybe??, It will come though. Not as fast as I wish. Thanks for your comment. Merry X-mas to you.

Re: New member wants help

I would recommend any beginner to stay far and away clear of pedals and added effects, they can too soon become a crutch, a decent amp that has both good cleans and a nice breakup will teach you how to pull more tone from your fingers , your guitar and your amp, mistakes cant be hidden, you have to work to improve your playing ability and clean up your playing so you push yourself to sound better with what you have
Get Videos, Good ones, Hot Licks series videos are pretty good, as well as some RHS, and Hal Leonard vids Practice practice practice , there are no real short cuts

Hey thanks, I 'll look for those videos your talking about. I did purchase a Wah pedal several months ago, but Don't use it yet. The temptation is a bit too much at times but I leave it alone. Any EASY songs to learn?? I know "Wish you were here", "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" by floyd. Working on some JP, Living after Midnight, Green Manaleshi, Also working on AC/DCs Live Wire, Hard as a Rock, Sin City, & Hail Ceaser.

Well, One GOOD thing that can be said about Wah Pedals is that you can udse pre set tones as long as your Wah dosent snap back to start for amps with limited tone control, a wah can be a handy Eq

Hot licks videos I highly recommend are Ronnie Earl's Blues Guitar with Soul, and Warren Haynes Electric Lead and Slide guitar , Danny Gattons Strictly Rhthym guitar Duke Robilliard is another good video instructor of merit , Ed Koch also does some great videos under various production houses

Re: New member wants help

theres 2 ways of doing it, either hit the little postage stamp looking landscape picture above the reply box (once youve hit reply) if its on a web page, or hit hte manage attachments button if its loaded on your computer.

I think Bobo did a whole load of frequently asked questions and full explanations are in there...

I just bought the VOX AD50VT. It's a great amp. That line of hybrid amps is available in 15,30,50 or 100 watts. Those are considered hybrids, in the pre amps they use some tubes.
