That's odd. Could actually be a legit guitar. Not sure if they were making MICs in 2003. Everything else seems fine except for the odd serial number,

That guitar is really odd.

It doesn't look fake to me. It could indeed be one of the very first guitars ever made at Qingdao, that would also explain the low production number (114) on a guitar that was made in October.
According to the Epiphone History, Qingdao has been opened in 2003.

The dash and font in the serial is all I saw to be honest. Never seen anything like that before.

Thats what I'm saying, epis are not supposed to have dashes in the sn, and the font is way off...

Says who? Maybe they changed it up... It's not like Gibson never changes anything in how they print S/N's either.

Well, the guitar arrived today and is indeed a poor quality counterfeit guitar.

Its bad enough to have to be returned to the seller.

I'll post some detailed pictures when they have uploaded to Flickr but obvious details like the wrong volume/tone pots and a rhythm/treble surround on the pickup selector had me disappointed as soon as I opened the box.

Anyone know if Gibson/Epiphone would be willing to verify the guitar as counterfeit in order for me to pursue a claim through Ebay/PayPal ?

Be great if there was a simple route for doing this - Ebay are telling me I need written confirmation from an expert before they will do anything.
Will I have to approach my local official Gibson dealer for confirmation or can Gibson confirm just by looking at the pictures ?

You can contact Gibson by email and they should be able to confirm it's a fake - hopefully the email alone will satisfy ebay...

Yes, like Epiphone said, just contact Gibson Customer Service and let them confirm that it's a fake.

Pictures on their way to Gibson for the official word.

Clearly the pictures in the Ebay listing were of a genuine or more convincing fake.
I just checked the guys Ebay feedback and a few of the other buyers seem to be happy with their purchase. Not sure whether they have also received fakes or even whether they care if they have. Mine was unplayable out of the box with fret buzz all over the neck and the bridge seemed to be wound close to maximum height.

I believe a lot of the fake sellers also sell fake items, (I.E. Not really selling anything) and have their buddies in the business supposedly buy said items and leave feedbacks. I wouldnt think even for a second that several people buying fakes from these guys would even hesitate to dump a scathing feedback if they'd been taken. Thats my take on it all.

I´m from Brazil and i´ve purchased a epiphone standard les paul form a seller who claims it came from Korea 1994. But in tha back of the headstock it shows EE0405XXXX and the numbers 5 and the last "X" have different colours form the rest. Is it fake?
