Re: The Fake Epiphone Thread II

Hi, new here.. I just wanted to have this "appraised" whether it's fake or not. It actually belongs to a friend of mine but I plan on buying it if it's legit.

(there's a little bit of a patch up job on the bottom - hence the blackened part-)

And here's the serial number:

Somewhere around $320... depending on the US dollar rate conversion since I'm paying in Philippine Pesos.

Hi Denim, that's about 16,000 Php eh? That's a pretty good deal for that MIJ Epi.

Taga-Cebu ka pala. Madaming gitara dyan! . Are the Lumanogs still producing acoustic guitars?

It's almost impossible to find any Gibson/Epiphone les pauls being sold here, let alone second hand ones... so when I heard he wanted to get rid of it, I pounced. XD I just needed to know if it was good. Thanks for the confirmation. :3

Haha oo.. ang dami talaga dito. I think they still do. I just got back a few months ago from Florida so I haven't really had a look around to confirm.

Re: The Fake Epiphone Thread II

Are you there to stay? Or do you plan to go back to Florida?

Here to stay for a while. I'm not sure when I'm going back.. or if I'm going back. Life's a little easier here. Haha tingnan ko if I go back to US kung bebentahan ko (forgive my Tagalog if it's not good). For now, I just really wanted to have a great sounding (and looking) guitar.

The headstock on this Jr. caught my eye...

Epiphone Les Paul Junior - eBay (item 320334863771 end time Feb-22-09 13:04:21 PST)

Is that a fake or just something messed up in the factory?

Wow, sloppy on the name on the headstock, I think thats probably a quality control issue, more than likely real.

Did I just buy a fake?

Saw this on eBay and I looked through this thread and checked everything...

1) The "h" in Epiphone is slightly to the right of the center of the headstock
2) The knobs line up with the screw in the pickguard
3) Truss rod cover is bell shaped and uses TWO screws

I thought I did my homework but then after I bought it I found this on Gibson's website concerning serial numbers:

Epiphone Elite/Elitist models
FYSSSS
F= Factory Code (this code will be an "F" or "T")
Y= Year of manufacture (2 = 2002, 3 = 2003, etc.)
SSSS= Sequential Serial Number
Example - T41234 is a 2004 Elitist model.

You can see the serial number on this guitar is F600048. The Gibson info above says the sequential serial number is FOUR digits and mine has FIVE.

Also, this guitar was a factory second because of a minor blemish on the finish. I didn't think a fake would go to the trouble of stamping the back of the headstock as a factory second. But who knows.

What concerns me is the serial number being one extra digit.

UPDATE:

Sorry but I freaked out when I saw the extra digit. The Guitar Project website says that the length of my serial number is OK. The Gibson site doesn't gave the latest info and I freaked!

The Guitar Project website says:

Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Fuji-gen Plant, Japan
2006
Production Number: 00048

Re: The Fake Epiphone Thread II

No offense, but yu havn't been around a long time. That is an Epi Elitist, as you stated. It was MIJ, and is an amazing guitar, and not fake. Whats the price? Since it's a used second it's probably a great deal.

Re: The Fake Epiphone Thread II

Should I delete the post? I paid $609

I didn't think that was bad considering the street price was about $1200 when they were selling new. Actualy, it's a new "second" supposedly.

Re: The Fake Epiphone Thread II

Hi guys

Ok, I was dumb and didn't do my research before ordering an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Plus from an on-line supplier. Having looked on here and seeing the apparent problem worldwide with fakes, how can I tell if the guitar I have is real or otherwise?

Having looked closely at it now, I see a few things that would make me suspicious, however I may just be paranoid now! Having played it, it plays well and the sound isn't shoddy. The action feels good etc., but having been a strat player all my life I have no idea what to look for.

Sorry if these images are too big!

Re: The Fake Epiphone Thread II

It actually sounds ok...

I took a picture of the body cavity and it looks as solid as I'd expect (and the weight seems about right).

I've been told on another forum that the seller is known to sell fakes, but as this one goes it seems pretty good (note the quality issues on the banding one the left hand side of the head, the offset logo slightly under the tuning peg, odd spacing in the diamond, but it does play ok, so perhaps I upgrade the pups and wiring and keep it!
