Epiphone SG G400 won´t stay in tune

My little brother got the SG for christmas.
The guitar won´t stay in tune after being tuned.

My guess it´s the saddle up on the head of the guitar.
Could i be right or are the any other views of the problem?

More than likely...yeah, it's the nut.

Did it ever get a setup?

Should he change it for a graphite nut then?

Re: Epiphone SG G400 won´t stay in tune

before getting a new nut, get some graphite (mechanical pencil lead) and gernerously rub it into the nut slots. restring and tune. sometimes this is a cheap and decent fix.

Re: Epiphone SG G400 won´t stay in tune

Have the factory strings been replaced ??? If not (or even if so) I'd recommend learning how to properly wrap strings when restringing, as I think that's the problem more often than not. Yeah, lubing the nut with graphite is all well and good, do it myself, but an improperly wound string will only compound the "tuning" woes, imho. The guitar's owners manual should contain the info needed.... here's a link, it's in there...

I see a lot of folks want to replace their tuners because their guitar won't stay in tune. Investigate cheap fixes first, as many times the fix will turn out to be the cheap one.

j/k....giving it up to the Irishman and the Tenneseean. (although a nut isn't a bad upgrade to consider...)

Re: Epiphone SG G400 won´t stay in tune

My strings usually do not stay in tune until they are broken in for a couple hours. That and once your tune your guitar, let it sit and tune it again. You will be surprised how off the initial tuning is. BTW it isn't your tuner when it comes to that. I just bought a Pitchblack and I'll tune, play a couple chords and check to see the tuning and it is a tad off. Usually after that it is good to go.

Re: Epiphone SG G400 won´t stay in tune

I agree with changing the factory strings, and stringing them up properly. Another thing I do when I put strings on is stretch the hell out of them. Tune to pitch, pull on them off the fretboard a bit, push down on them behind the nut and bridge, retune to pitch...repeat until the stretching makes no or little difference. I have had several Epiphones with the Grovers and still own two, and have never had tuning issues, knock on wood.

Those stock Gibson strings don't stay in tune too well (especially the G) I'd reccomend trying d'addarios or something on insted.

MVL.

Not forgetting to give them a good ole stretch.

Re: Epiphone SG G400 won´t stay in tune

new nut and new strings will have to do..
yes i am aware of how to string a guitar and it is the factory strings.
alot of folks seems to like d´addario but they always break right away for me, just won´t stand my bendings.
I prefer Ernie Ball stainless steel strings, without nickel plating, love the sound and feel of them.
the strings have been broken in more than properly.
I have tried Gibson GSA-10 strings on my Les Paul and they stay in tune real good as do ernie ball, and GHS boomers.
