Problems with my new Epiphone les paul studio - worn cherry (need advice for problems

Heyy guys, i recently got my new epiphone les paul studio worn cherry from my local music store, she cost me £189.

The strings that came with her were ok but 2 of them snapped in the first week of playing, and i wasn't playing very hard on her. so i went out and bought a new pair of ernie ball super slinky, however i find the bottom 3 strings a bit too skiny for what i play, i might get and pair of skiny top heavy bottom...any thoughts or recomendations?

Today i destringed her and applied some specialized lemon oil on the neck as it was very dry, and my exema on my hands doesn't help keep it mosturized, so the lemon oil went great and it feels alot better.

Heres my problem it seems that when i play the bottom three strings there is a slight buzzing/hissing feedback from my lead pickup, which goes away when i rest my finger on it. Now i am scared to open her up and look as i don't know much about the inside of guitars...has this happened to anyone else...what should i do...please help!!!!!!!

Also the action on the guitar was too low so i raised the action to almost as far as it goes (and she still plays well and comfortably), but there is still a wee bit of fret buzz, especially on power chords. what should i do ?

i will be going away for a few days after i post this so i will be hoping for alot of feedback when i return...while i am away (with family) my LP is my only sanity, i am sure lots of you understand.

thanks...any advice on any part of the LP is appreciated

Without having the guitar in our grubby hands, we really can't diagnose the difficulties you may be having.
Your best bet is to take it to the shop you purchased it from, or to a local shop that can help you decide what is the problems.
Good luck, and Happy New Year!

As to the buzzing problem - there always should be a LITTLE bit of buzzing going on, just as long as it doesnt carry through to the amp. If this is the case, then it is set up good.

You should take it to your place of purchase and inquire about a 'set-up' for the guitar.
Talk to the person who will set-up the guitar and tell them what seems to be the problem and also how it would best suit your playing style to have the action set to your liking.
Should be around $50 in most cases (but $30 is plenty fair.)

If the shop doesnt do a set up for you. I'd say return it for something else.

seconded. Also tell 'em what kind of strings you use and make sure they set the intonation for that gauge...

Listen to these guys man. More than likely a "Set Up" is all you need. $50 bucks and your Jammin Bro. Welcome to the Forum Studio!!!

Most good music stores should offer a free set up as part of the deal.

When I purchased my Les Paul, my local store (PMT) said take it home play it for a while and give it a few weeks to acclimatise and settle down. Then bring it back in for a basic set up. This was done as part of the deal, and got rid of the initial small problems.

However a year or so later I took it to a real good luthier for a new tusque nut and neck job, cost C £50.

+1 to the posts above. The buzzing you are experiencing may be due to the fact that the skinnier strings are not exerting as much force to the neck, and the truss rod may need to be loosened a touch. Have the shop do a set-up.

Well, I'm not an expert but I suppose your neck pickup is too close to the strings. Try lowering the neck pickup, especially from the high E side and that should solve the hissing problem. I had the same problem and it worked. Alternatively you can raise the action but that would make it uncomfortable playing.

Not really, but it's not for the squeemish. I've found you rarely need more than a quarter of a turn one way or the other to get it where you want it.

small adjustments, yes--still
you need the knowledge and the right tools-- i've set up a lot of guitars for friends and bands on tour, and it's amazing how little some players know.
between the nut, truss and bridge, i do think its part art to get a guitar to play and sound the way you want that particular guitar to play and sound--

Yeah, I hear you on that. Never ceases to amaze me how many really good players know NOTHING about how to do a simple set-up. I've set up more than a few myself, but I've never thought of it as much of an art, just part of the territory. Doesn't take much to learn how to do it right, just a willingness to learn.

The way he is describing sounds more like a grounding issue. His finger is acting as the ground. Check and make sure you lead pups pots are grounded properly.
